Division of Acute Care Surgery

Welcome

We are a highly skilled team of board certified surgeons in surgery and surgical critical care working in collaboration with dedicated professionals from anesthesiology who are critical care board certified. We have been an American College of Surgeons verified Level I trauma center since 1994 without interruption. The maintenance of this verification requires that we demonstrate the highest standards of patient care and institutional commitment. Along with a busy clinical service our physicians are committed to educating medical students, residents, pharmacy residents and established physicians utilizing the University of Vermont’s state of the art Simulation Center to enhance the learning of critical skills including central line placement, needle thoracostomy, chest tube placement, pericardiocenthesis, vessel ‘cut down’, wound management, and difficult airway skills including surgical airway.

Education

Faculty are instructors in Advanced Trauma Life Support, Advanced Burn Life Support, Advanced Trauma Operative Management as well as offer courses that are widely attended by participants throughout the Northeast.

We also offer a highly successful, annual critical care conference, attended by physicians, physician assistants, pharmacists, respiratory therapist, nurses and the occasional hospital administrator. We have offered workshops that teach a variety of skills including critical care ultrasound, difficult airway management, surgical airway, advanced ventilator management, and inferior vena cave filter placement.
