The Teaching Academy at the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont held its Snow Season Education Retreat on January 11-12, 2018 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Burlington, Vermont. Highlights of the event included the announcement of the inaugural Frederick C. Morin, M.D. Educational Leadership Award and a keynote lecture on “New Pathways through Medical School: EPAs, Time-Variable Competencies and Progression” by Susan Skochelak, M.D., M.P.H., Group Vice President, Medical Education, American Medical Association.
The opening festivities also included an Induction Ceremony for new members and Teaching and Education Awards, including the introduction of the Morin award and its first recipient. Teaching Academy Director Kathryn Huggett, Ph.D., Dean Frederick Morin, M.D., and UVM Health Network Medical Group President Claude Deschamps, M.D., recognized new members and honorees at the event.
In his remarks about the new Frederick C. Morin Educational Leadership Award, Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education William Jeffries, Ph.D., said “It is fitting that the Teaching Academy chose to create an educational leadership award to recognize individuals who have a significant impact on the direction and outcome of our education mission. When considering the creation of this award, we decided that it would be most fitting if this award was not a generic leadership award, but that the award should have a name. It should be named after an individual whose career reflected a substantial legacy of education at the Larner College of Medicine.”
Paula Tracy, Ph.D., outgoing director of the Foundations level of the Vermont Integrated Curriculum (VIC) was honored as the inaugural recipient of the Morin Educational Leadership Award in recognition of her role as “a distinguished teacher, scientist and leader . . . an important role model . . . one of the most effective and popular teachers of medical students . . . one of the original designers of the Vermont Integrated Curriculum . . .”
Tracy, who was named Foundations Director in 2012, joined the College of Medicine’s faculty in 1984 and is a professor and former interim chair of biochemistry. According to Jeffries, her many improvements to the Foundations level of the VIC include “the creation of the Foundations of Clinical Science course, the integration of simulation-based education, the introduction of point-of-care ultrasound training, the introduction of a course quality assurance program, the design of new educational facilities, the creation of two state-of-the-art large group active learning classrooms, the introduction of the pass-fail grading, the introduction of a class run metabolic research project and the creation of several cultural competency modules.”
