All non-curriculum-related email communications are directed through the Wire to help support manageable email inboxes for our students; it's your one-stop-shop for all med school happenings outside of the classroom!   • THIS WEEK - RSVP DEADLINE - UVM Medical Alumni Reception in Boston: 05/24 RSVP deadline. 5/29 event. Pramila Yadav, M.D. '99 and Frederick Mandell, M.D. '64 and the UVM Medical Alumni Association, invite you and a guest to a special reception to welcome the new Dean of the UVM Larner College of Medicine...  
  • Don't forget to take care of your LCOM Mailbox! If you can, please empty your LCOM Given Mailbox prior to leaving campus. Mailbox numbers and combinations are listed under "Mailboxes, Lockers, Clickers & Pagers" tab, in OASIS Academic History. The mailroom will can forward your mail up to 6 months after graduation; they just need your completed mail forwarding form.
  • COMET Access after graduation: You will have access to COMET and COMET resources for two full years after graduation.
  • LCOM & UVM Email Addresses: You will have your LCOM and UVM email addresses for a full year after graduation.
  • Want to Continue to Receive the WeeklyWire after You Graduate? co2019 will receive two final issues of the WeeklyWire post-Commencement. If you would like to continue to receive the WeeklyWire, please email StudentCOMServices@med.uvm.edu with your new email address and "I'd like to subscribe to the WeeklyWire", and we will add you to our "Out of Network" subscribers list.

  • THIS WEEK - A Message from Facilities Administration - Construction Notice: 05/20. Stafford Low Roof Replacement Project will begin... 
  • UVM Offices Closed for Memorial Day Holiday: Monday, 5/27. All university administrative offices, including the Office of Medical Student Education, will be closed on Monday, May 27, in observance of Memorial Day. Please plan accordingly, and we apologize for any inconvenience.
  • Annual Sprinkler Alarm Testing: 05/30, 6am-2:30pm, in Given/HSRF/Rowell. This test consists of flowing water through the sprinkler pipe that will cause the fire alarm to activate.
  • New Face in OMSE: The Office of Medical Student Education is excited to welcome Chelsey Sack as our new front desk representative. She will begin in our office on June 10. Please join us in making her feel welcome and celebrating the new addition to our community. 
  • Technology Tip – Has your OneNote notebook frozen? Is OneNote performing slowly?: The EdTech Team has produced a brief screencast showing how to close OneNote notebooks that may be open in the background. Doing this will free up processing power for your computer. 
    • As always, the EdTech team is here to assist you.  Reach out to us via email (edtech@med.uvm.edu) or come visit us in the Larner Learning Commons, MedEd 132. 
  • Do you order pizza for student group/student events [with budget approval, of course]?* We discovered that Papa John’s offers a 40% discount on orders for UVM Student Groups and Leonardo’s offers 10% off on UVM Student Group orders. If/when you are ordering for your student events, don’t forget to tell them we are tax exempt and request the discount (“this order is for a UVM student group").

YOU SAID, WE DID - YOUR WORDS IN ACTION

This is a new section of the WeeklyWire, thanks to collaborating student interest groups and the Medical Student Services Team. If you receive feedback from our students and put that feedback into action, please let our student community know; submit postings/updates to studentCOMServices@med.uvm.edu by 7am, in Fridays for inclusion in the upcoming issue.

  • You Said, We Did Section Added to the WeeklyWire: Based on recent feedback from students, we were inspired to launch this new section of the WeeklyWire! We look forward to your future contributions. 
  • Medical Profession-focused Story-Telling Event: For the past three years, the LCOM Gold Humanism Honor Society fourth-year members have shared their desire for a "MedMoth" type event. Dedicated AOA and GHHS faculty and staff, this years' GHHS & AOA fourth-year members, and members of our Wellness Community made the vision a reality in an incredibly successful StorySlamRx event on Thursday evening, May 16, 2019. We had eight incredible story-tellers share their stories of resilience to a crowd of over 60 incredible "story-consumers" who were moved and inspired. We look forward to making this an annual event.
  • WeeklyWire Updated: Your Student Communications Task Force (led by your Student Council Communications Chairs), launched class-specific WeeklyWire issues, emailed to your inbox. We launched this shorter, more individualized mailing a few weeks ago. Like reading all of the class-specific announcements? No worries! We still host a comprehensive issue online...
  • Clerkship Comparability: In February, students approached Dean Zehle with concerns regarding equitable time commitment at clerkships across affiliate sites and our VT campus. These concerns were shared with the Associate Dean for Clinical Curriculum and the Associate Dean for Medical Education at the LCOM-WCHN Campus. Further discussions were held at the March Clerkship Directors meeting to ensure and support comparability, which is an LCME standard and expectation.

Housing Opportunities

Graduate students are highly sought tenants in the Burlington area and property owners often advertise specifically to them with special rates (less than would be offered to undergraduate students); thus, the Office of Medical Student Education pulls together a list of housing opportunities posted specifically for this group, so you don't miss out on a good deal. Moreover, medical students also try to keep good spaces "in the family" and are known to post to this list. Please contact the Office of Medical Education if you have any questions.

Don't hesitate to ask the contact if they would consider lowering the advertised rate to secure a graduate student; it never hurts to ask!

Lost & Found

Lost something? Email the Office of Medical Student Education (OMSE) a description of the item. OMSE and the Dana Medical Library recently joined the UVM campus-wide lost & found system and search not only the College of Medicine, but campus as a whole to see if it's been turned in. If it hasn't, the office can file a claim for the item should someone turn it in soon!

Found something? Please turn it into either the Office of Medical Student Education (Given Courtyard n100) or the Dana Medical Library (First floor of the Medical Education Center) and we will be sure to log it into the Campus-Wide Lost & Found Database.

Found items are kept up to 30 days, and then are donated to various local organizations depending on the item.
