Larner College of Medicine medical students who are interested in taking a deeper dive into research have a new opportunity: The College's Medical Student Research Fellowships. Announced January 31 by Senior Associate Dean for Research Gordon Jensen, M.D., Ph.D., and Director of Medical Student Research and Professor of Medicine Renee Stapleton, M.D., Ph.D., the program offers two one-year research fellowships to be conducted between the third and fourth years of medical school.

“Dr. Stapleton and I are thrilled to announce this wonderful new opportunity for medical students to work with our faculty in a comprehensive full-year research experience," said Jensen. "Students' selected topics can fall anywhere along the continuum of basic/mechanistic, translational, clinical, health services, and population health investigations.”

Awardees will complete the first three months of the Advanced Integration level of the Vermont Integrated Curriculum starting in March of their third year, and then complete the remaining portion of the curriculum upon returning to complete medical school during a fifth year.

The first fellowships are scheduled to begin July 1, 2020.

To be eligible, students must have a research mentor who is a full-time Larner College of Medicine faculty member. Both the student and the mentor must sign the application, which must be submitted to Dr. Stapleton via email at renee.stapleton@med.uvm.edu by no later than 5:00 p.m. on March 20, 2020.

A review committee consisting of the senior associate dean for research, the senior associate dean for medical education, the associate dean for graduate and post-doctoral training, and the director of medical student research will review the applications and select awardees.
