March 15 - 21, 2021

The WeeklyWire is an official communication tool of the Larner College of Medicine. Student feedback led to its development and continues to inform iterative improvements. All non-curriculum-related email communications are directed through the Wire to help support manageable email inboxes for our students; it's your one-stop-shop for all med school happenings outside of the classroom! Please do not hesitate to contact the Office of Medical Student Education with any questions.

COMMUNITY WELLNESS

Be sure to review this section for any announcements regarding student wellness! If you ever have any questions about this section, it's postings, or any wellness topics, please do not hesitate to contact our Director of Student Well-being, Dr. Lee Rosen or reach out to one of your Larner College of Medicine Wellness Committee representatives.

ADDITIONAL WELLNESS RESOURCES/INFORMATION:

  • Let's Talk: Feeling lonely? Want help working through an argument? Concerned you’re sleeping too much or too little? Let’s Talk offers daily (Monday–Friday) drop-in one-on-one conversations with CAPS counselors who can support you with whatever’s on your mind. Some sessions are open to all students while others are held in collaboration with identity centers for students with specific identities. Find a time to talk...
  • Catamount Kudos! Navigating life at UVM in a pandemic can be rough, and it can be easy to think about all the things we’re bummed about losing. But UVM Bored is helping us discover things we’ve gained.  Share your Catamount Kudo, and read other kudos, here...
  • Mental Health Resources: COVID-19 can lead to increased feelings of anxiety and depression. Students, don’t hesitate to reach out to the Center for Health & Wellbeing and make an appointment with a counselor, or drop in for a Let’s Talk conversation. Students are typically able to connect with a counselor the same day they call. Make an appointment with a counselor...
  • Take Care of Others with Help from the CARE Team: Are you concerned about a UVM student? The CARE Form is a way to share a concern about the health, safety, or wellbeing of a UVM community member (anonymously if needed). The number one priority is to support a healthy and safe community for everyone, so we also want to hear from you if you are concerned about a specific event you’ve witnessed.
  • UVM COVID-19 Student Testing Protocol: All students who are on-campus/in-person (UVMMC and/or UVM-VT) and/or who live in Burlington, South Burlington or Winooski and who do not have a testing exemption must engage in UVM COVID-19 surveillance testing (Green & Gold Promiseverify your permanent address reflects your real location in myUVM).
    • COVID-19 Vaccine: As COVID-19 vaccine distribution occurs, we recognize there are many questions. For answers to emerging questions, the university has developed a COVID-19 Vaccine Q&A page that will be updated throughout the semester. Please note, his page does not currently host vaccine availability/distribution information.
    • Exemption Requests: If you are away and will therefore miss the 7-9 day testing window, you must submit a temporary exemption request. If you fall under "required to test" guidelines and still feel you should be exempt, please include extenuating circumstance in your exemption request form to help expedite processing.
      • One request can cover multiple weeks! Exemption should end the day you plan to return to campus.
      • You must use your netID@uvm.edu email address/Outlook account to enter the UVM portal and sign-into the request tool (UVM Credentials); this might require you to log out of your MED Outlook or open a guest window/profile in Chrome to use a browser without your remembered MED credentials.
      • You cannot step onto VT/UVMMC campus(es) during an exemption window. However, an exemption will not block you from testing at the Davis Center.
      • Approved exemptions include:
        • "I am enrolled in clinical rotations occurring outside of Chittenden County with no intention of physically visiting the UVM or UVM Medical Center campus(es)."
        • "I will miss testing due to essential travel or extenuating circumstances (briefly describe circumstances)"
        • "I do not attend in-person curriculum at UVM-VT and/or the UVMMC campus(es), and I am not living, meeting or socializing with any student, faculty or staff who is going to either campus(es)."
        • SPECIAL APPROVAL FOR 2nd Weekly Testing Exemption Only (exemption should frame second testing cycle with exemption end date to land on your day-seven test): "I’ve completed a full COVID-19 Vaccination cycle (2 doses and 2+ weeks out from second dose)"

LCOMcares - WAYS TO HELP/VOLUNTEER

We are sharing opportunities and needs in the State of Vermont. The University of Vermont has not vetted or researched these opportunities and cannot warrant or recommend one opportunity over another. It is your sole responsibility to thoroughly evaluate any volunteer organization or opportunity before engaging. Please practice physical distancing and follow the established guidelines to keep yourself and your community safe. Consider the following opportunities independently and carefully after looking into the organization and their safety practices.

Housing Opportunities

Graduate students are highly sought tenants in the Burlington area and property owners often advertise specifically to them with special rates (less than would be offered to undergraduate students); thus, the Office of Medical Student Education pulls together a list of housing opportunities posted specifically for this group, so you don't miss out on a good deal. Moreover, medical students also try to keep good spaces "in the family" and are known to post to this list. Please contact the Office of Medical Education if you have any questions.

Don't hesitate to ask the contact if they would consider lowering the advertised rate to secure a graduate student; it never hurts to ask!

Lost & Found

Lost something? Email the Office of Medical Student Education (OMSE) a description of the item. OMSE and the Dana Medical Library recently joined the UVM campus-wide lost & found system and search not only the College of Medicine, but campus as a whole to see if it's been turned in. If it hasn't, the office can file a claim for the item should someone turn it in soon!

Found something? Please turn it into either the Office of Medical Student Education (Given Courtyard n100) or the Dana Medical Library (First floor of the Medical Education Center) and we will be sure to log it into the Campus-Wide Lost & Found Database.

Found items are kept up to 30 days, and then are donated to various local organizations depending on the item.
