- UVM Campus Recreation - Old CATcards Deactivated: Accounts connected to Old CATCards are being deactivated. If you have not yet been issued your NEW CATCard, you will need to obtain it by Friday, March 10 in order to continue accessing Campus Recreation facilities. This includes people who are registered for biometrics (finger scan). In order to continue facility access, please visit the CATCard office prior to your next facility visit. The CATcard office is open Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm and is located in Billings B-150. Access will not be granted after March 10 until the NEW CATCard has been obtained. Policy Statement
Email is the official means of communication of the Robert Larner, M.D. College of Medicine at The University of Vermont. Students are expected to check their Larner College of Medicine e-mail accounts daily and maintain their account so that they remain functional (e.g., not allowing their mailboxes to exceed the quota, not forwarding it to a third party account, etc.). Students who do not read official notices sent in email are not excused from responsibility for email contents.

- APPROACHING DEADLINE- CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS - Class of 2017 Graduation Student Speaker: With Match Week and Commencement in our sights, it is time to start planning for the important selection of the Class of 2017 student graduation speaker. If you are interested in being considered for this role, please submit your speech (5-7 minutes in length) to Kiersten Hallquist no later than Monday, March 20th, at 10:00am. All submissions will be reviewed by a selection Committee and the student will be notified of the selection results no later than April 19th. Please contact Kiersten Hallquist with any questions.

- Post-Match residency program paperwork: After Match Day concludes, most students will start receiving paperwork from their programs, part of which will need to be completed by OMSE. Program and state licensure forms can be brought or sent to Emma Faustner for completion. Please include any unique instructions (do the forms need to be sealed, returned to the student, sent directly to the program/board, completed after graduation, etc.). Final transcripts showing the degree conferred and certified copies of the diploma will be available after graduation from the UVM Registrar’s Office.
- Returning your UVMMC Lockers (Baird) & Pagers: If you no longer need your pager, please return it to the Office of Medical Student Education. If you no longer use your locker, please email Jacqueline Drouin and let her know that you no longer use your locker. We will be welcoming students from the Class of 2019 into the Clerkship year, and we will need to provide them with pagers and UVMMC lockers. Many thanks for your assistance!

- Please Take A few Moments to assess your Musculoskeletal Knowledge: Dr. McCarthy needs your help to assess your musculoskeletal knowledge! In case you didn’t know, musculoskeletal injuries are the second most common reason patients seek medical attention. There is a multiple-choice exam on COMET (https://comet.med.uvm.edu; Password: themsk17) under “Assessment of Musculoskeletal Knowledge.” It should take about 10-15 minutes to complete. This research will help you see where your knowledge lies, and will help us to refine the musculoskeletal curriculum at UVM to benefit future classes. Thank you! - DEADLINE THIS WEEK - Visiting Elective Program for Underrepresented Students, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai: The Icahn School of Medicine's Visiting Electives Program for Students Underrepresented in Medicine (VEPSUM) Fellowship, sponsored by the Center for Multicultural and Community Affairs. VEPSUM Fellowship offers four-week electives at The Mount Sinai Hospital to a limited number of qualified 4th-year medical students who attend United States accredited medical schools, and who are from groups underrepresented in medicine. - University of Iowa Jackson Steindler Orthopaedic Clerkship 2017 - application due April 1: The University of Iowa Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation is pleased to announce that it is accepting applications for the Jackson-Steindler Orthopedic Clerkship. Beginning in Spring 2017, one or two outstanding medical students who have successfully completed the third year of medical school at a LCME-accredited institution and who have an interest in orthopedics will be selected for this award. - Visiting Externship in Internal Medicine for URM Students Sidney Kimmel Medical College Philadelphia PA: This rotation provides an opportunity for underrepresented minority students to have a month-long clinical experience in the Department of Medicine at Jefferson where they can get to know the institution, department, and residency program. This opportunity is for students who anticipate applying for a residency in internal medicine. This rotation may be done in the months of June, July, August, or September. - Freeman Foundation Legacy Scholarship Opportunity: The Larner College of Medicine is pleased to announce that applications are being accepted for the Freeman Foundation Legacy Medical Scholarship for at least four members of the Class of 2019 to be awarded at least $5,000 in the current 2016-2017 academic year (amount may vary based on number of applicants). Applicants should have a passion for, and commitment to, meeting the health care needs of Vermonters post-residency. The deadline to apply is Monday, March 27th, 2017. Gold Foundation Student Summer Fellowship: The Student Summer Fellowship program offers opportunities for medical students to complete a domestic or international research or service project related to community health. Projects must be focused on studying cultural competency issues, developing skills to become relationship-centered physicians, and addressing a public health need in an under-served community or population. The Fellowship award includes a stipend of up to $4,000 for a 10-week project. Medical students at accredited U.S. or Canadian schools of allopathy or osteopathy may apply for either the Research or Service Fellowships. Studies show that physicians treat patients who are not obese with greater care and empathy, yet fail to refer patients with obesity for necessary diagnostic tests. Are students and clinicians biased against patients with obesity?
- Stigma towards patients with mental illness: March 15–22
People with mental illness experience higher mortality rates and are generally in poorer health than others in the general population. Do clinicians contribute to these disparities by stigmatizing patients with mental illness?

The Fletcher Free Library was selected as one of 19 public libraries nationwide to host the Exploring Human Origins: What Does it Mean to be Human? traveling exhibition, which is organized by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History in collaboration with the American Library Association Public Programs Office. This project was made possible through the support of a grant from the John Templeton Foundation and support from the Peter Buck Human Origins Fund.
Through panels, interactive kiosks, interactive displays, and videos, the exhibition invites audiences to explore milestones in the evolutionary journey of becoming human — from walking upright, creating technology and eating new foods, to brain enlargement and the development of symbolic language and complex societies — advancements that define the unique position of humans in the history of life. THIS WEEK - Annual Specimen Cup!
The Athletics SIG would like to announce that the annual Specimen Cup will be held March 18th, from 4:30 PM - 6:30 PM, at Gutterson Fieldhouse (UVM Athletic Campus). The Specimen Cup is an annual hockey game between our UVM Larner COM community and our colleagues at the Dartmouth Geisel SOM. The game is a charity event in honor of former UVMLCOM faculty member Bruce Fonda, with donation proceeds going toward the Vermont Respite House. The event is hosted by the Athletics SIG and is a great opportunity for community members to come out and show their school pride, as well as form new relationships with our colleagues at Dartmouth. UVM currently has a several year winning streak, however the last two years have been close games, decided by only 1 goal. The Specimen Cup trophy is on display in the Given Courtyard under the stairs between the North and South buildings.

Lunching with Leadership Session
Tuesday, March 21, 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM, in the Given Courtyard S359 Conference Room. Join representatives from each of the student leadership groups (Student Council, Wellness, OSR, SEG, DACDI and the Curriculum Committee) for the first Lunching with the Leadership session. The purpose of this lunch is to promote bidirectional communication between students and student leadership groups. As you enjoy a catered lunch, you will get an update on current projects being addressed by the various student groups. You will also have a chance to ask questions and share feedback about LCOM activities and your medical education. We will use your concerns and suggestions to drive the agenda at the next Executive Board Meeting between student representatives and LCOM deans. Share your concerns, identify problems, and suggest solutions that you may have regarding your medical education or your experience at LCOM.
The first 12 students to sign up are in! We are hoping to hold these lunches quarterly with the next session in June. APPROACHING DEADLINE - 10th Annual Residency Showcase at Northwestern -- Travel Stipends Available
In partnership with the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine Office of Diversity and Inclusion, the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University, the GME sponsor at Northwestern, will offer its 10th annual Residency Showcase on Saturday, 29 April 2017. The primary goal of this program is to diversify the applicant pools in our residency programs. Thus, we are particularly interested in attracting students with diverse backgrounds to attend. Our objective is to diversify in a very holistic sense including, but not limited to: gender, race, ethnicity, language skills, life experience, sexual orientation, religion. The patient population in our hospitals is extremely diverse and in order to continue to provide excellent care and training we recognize the need for a diverse cohort of trainees.
The McGaw Diversity Council is again offering a limited number of stipends up to $500 for prospective residents to attend the Showcase. These stipends are intended to defray travel expenses to and from Chicago for students McGaw has defined as underrepresented (see website for program-specific criteria). The Financial Assistance Program (FAP) provides financial incentives for physicians and dentists in select residencies and fellowships leading to appointments on active duty in the Medical Corps or Dental Corps. TMS is a Navy Reserve (SELRES DCO) program designed to provide financial and other incentives for professionals while in select Medical and Dental residency and fellowship programs. (Anesthesiology, General Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, and Oral Maxillofacial Surgery). The Women of Harvard Combined Orthopedic Residency Program invite all female medical students in New England to "The Bones Initiative" (Bringing Orthopedics to New England Students of Medicine) to hear from women in orthopedic residency, fellowship, and practice discuss how they manage their professional and personal lives; learn and practice orthopedic surgical skills, including suturing, fracture reduction and fixation techniques, splinting, and more; join us for an interactive session with skills training and learn why orthopedics is a great profession for women! New Research Emphasis - APPLICATION NOW AVAILABLE!
Beginning March 20th, in the evening, a new Research Emphasis will be offered to Medical Students. This optional Emphasis will be offered jointly to Doctor of Nursing Practice and Doctor of Medicine students. It will include several components including a 2-year monthly curriculum, quarterly journal clubs, opportunities to participate in "real-life" aspects of research (e.g. observe the process of clinical trial design), and resources for finding research projects and mentoring throughout the University. The 2-year curriculum will include workshops, hand-on sessions, and seminars on clinical, translational, and basic science research topics to improve your research knowledge and skills. APPROACHING DEADLINE - Arnold P. Gold Foundation Hope Babette Tang Humanism in Healthcare Essay Contest
The 2017 Hope Babette Tang Humanism in Healthcare Essay Contest encourages medical students to engage in a reflective writing exercise around a prompt or quote related to humanism in medicine. Winning essays are published in Academic Medicine, the official journal of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and are eligible to win up to $1,000.
This year, students are asked to reflect on the following quote and respond to the writing prompt with an original essay of 1,000 words or less: "Compassion becomes real when we recognize our shared humanity." (Pema Chodron) Using the quote as a reflective prompt, write an essay based on a true story or anecdote that illustrates an experience where you or a team member worked to ensure that humanism (compassionate, collaborative, scientifically excellent care) was at the core of medical practice. Deadline for submission: March 24, 2017.
Haiku Contest - due April Fool's 2017 - thirdspace @ Harvard Medical School
I am contacting you on behalf of thirdspace, the creative literary and arts journal run by Harvard Medical Students. Our hope is to capture perspectives on medical education throughout the ages, one contemporary piece at a time. We want to extend our invitation for submissions about the challenges, rewards, and peculiarities of medical education to the students and faculty at your medical school.
Our journal publishes creative pieces (i.e. fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and visual arts) from any authors. We accept submissions throughout the year on a "rolling basis," which means authors can submit their work to thirdspace at any time.
Upcoming Contest: We also run yearly contests, including our First Poetry - Haiku Contest that ends April 1, 2017. Details for the contest can be found here: http://www.thirdspacejournal.org.
