Community Connections
  • New/Revised Policies & Procedures: New/Revised Policies & Procedures Approved by the Medical Curriculum Committee Since March 2024 • PLEASE REVIEW - New/revised policies approved by the Medical Curriculum Committee since August 2023 have been summarized for your convenience. The LCOM Medical Student Handbook governs expected student roles and responsibilities. All students should be familiar with the content. Questions about any listed policy?   • New Affinity Group Sign Up: The Middle Eastern and North African Medical Students Association is kicking off its activities for the spring semester! If you are interested in joining for future events, please fill out the following Google form to receive updates. For more details, contact David Rezapour. 
  • Bolton Valley Ski and Ride Night: 3/11, 4-10pm, Bolton Valley Resort. Come ski and ride with the Medical School at Bolton Valley!  Beginner and experienced skiers welcome. Thank you to Student Council, The Office of Inclusive Excellence, and the Wellness Committee for helping to fund this initiative to get students on the slopes! We are offering to cover rental equipment for students and subsidized ticket prices! Pease RSVP using the form linked by March 4th to reserve your ticket!
  • 2025 Specimen Cup Hockey Game & Reception: Sunday, 3/16 at 2:30 PM in Gutterson Fieldhouse Join us for the 2025 Specimen Cup Hockey Match. The game will feature teams from the UVM Larner College of Medicine and the Dartmouth Geisel School of Medicine. A post-game reception will follow in the Victory Club at the Athletic Center.   • Dr. Moo and Dr. Moo Support Person Needed for Match Day: M1’s, M2’s and M3’s, Friday, March 21, 2025 - 11:00 A.M. - 1:15 P.M. Help the Class of 2025 Celebrate Match Day as Dr. Moo! Two volunteers are needed to help the Class of 2025 celebrate Match Day on Friday, March 21. Dr. Moo is an important part of Match Day, helping to lead the Class of 2025 into the Hoehl Gallery and congratulating students after they announce their Match. Two volunteers are needed, one to don the Dr. Moo suit and one to guide Dr. Moo safely into Hoehl Gallery.   • Vermont City Marathon & Relay Registration: 5/ 25, 7:15AM; 20 Lake St, Burlington, VT 05401. Running SIG will be fully sponsoring three, 5-person relay teams for Vermont City Marathon on Sunday, May 25th. Reach out to Jenna Bourdeau or Matthew O’Mara if you have a team and want the chance to be sponsored! We will be randomly selecting and registering prior to the price increase on MARCH 15th to give everyone plenty of time to register if not selected for funding. We will notify everyone interested, and if selected, have you completed a registration form. PLEASE ensure your team is committed to racing, it would be SO sad to have another team lose out on that funding! We really wish we could fund everyone, but if you aren’t selected, Connor Nowak has also posted an excellent option to raise money for the Cancer Center, including a discount from Run VT. Details on VCM: VCM is one of the most hype sporting events that takes place in Vermont with a TON of community support along the entire beautiful route and is the largest marathon relay in the US. Our goal is to have as much Larner participation as possible, so we have made the decision to use ~all~ of our sig funds to support the largest possible (5-person) team size. The relay distances add up to a full marathon, so there are several different distances that can be run at any pace, aka ANYONE can participate. This should be a blast, we hope to see you on the course or cheering on the sidelines!! 3–5-person relay team details here.
  • Housing Opportunity: Housing Opportunity starting June 1, 2025, hello all, I am graduating this spring and would like to pass my apartment on to another medical student. The apartment is a 2 bedroom, 1 bath unit at Riverside Condominiums, about a 15-minute walk from the school and hospital campus. Unit amenities include dishwasher, in-unit washer/dryer, and a balcony. There is also a community pool for residents at Riverside. Water and gas, trash and compost are included; electricity and Wi-Fi are set up by tenant. Parking is available on the street, in parking lots, and there is one garage space for the unit. Rent is $1,950/month. Pets are allowed but require a separate application and a $200 fee per year per pet. If you would like photos of the unit or have any questions, please reach me at 616-540-8003.   • New procedure for ADA accommodations letters... Starting next academic year (AY 2025-26, August), accommodations letters issued to medical students by UVM's Office of Accessibility Services (OAS) will be active only for the curricular level they are issued for. A meeting with the OAS representative (Dr. Laura Clemmons) is needed to determine eligibility for an upcoming curriculum level. As a reminder, at any point during an academic year, medical students can pursue ADA accommodation eligibility or submit new or amended ADA letters to OME/Dr. Moynihan.   • Honors Societies Info Session: 03/17, 4:30-5:30pm, via MS Teams (virtual). Open to all Larner Medical Students. The Larner College of Medicine hosts three primary honors societies for which students can qualify for membership. Join us to hear from our faculty councilors as they present an overview of each society...

  • Family Medicine Grand Rounds with Mariana Castells, MD, PhD- “Mast Cell Disease”: UVM Family Medicine is excited to share that Dr. Mariana Castells will be presenting at Grand Rounds on 3/24/25.  Dr. Castells is a world-renowned expert in mast cell disorders, anaphylaxis, and drug hypersensitivity and has made significant contributions to allergy and immunology research.  3/ 24 2025, 8:00 – 9:00 am Davis Auditorium / Zoom Join Zoom Meeting Presenter – In Person 
Research Opportunities
  • Application Deadline: Paid Summer Research Fellowship Opportunity: 3/ 19, 2025 Gain hands-on experience in cancer research under the mentorship of a UVM Cancer Center member, as a paid Summer Research Fellow! Under the UVM Cancer Center Summer Research Fellowship, students will receive a stipend of $4,000 to conduct cancer-related basic, clinical/translational, or population science research with a UVM Cancer Center member. This program has offered medical, graduate and undergraduate students a broad spectrum of cancer research opportunities in disciplines ranging from surgery, pharmacology, and radiation oncology to biochemistry, pathology, and psychiatry.   • Application Deadline- CVRI Early Career Advisory Committee:3/31.  The CVRI Board of Directors is requesting applications for new members for its Early Career Advisory Committee, which is tasked with identifying and addressing the needs of our Early Career scientists and involving them in CVRI’s cardiovascular-related activities. If you are an Early Career scientist (PhD and medical students, postdocs, residents, clinical fellows, and faculty within 4 years of their first appointment) interested or involved in cardiovascular-related research, please consider applying for a position on this committee.  If you know Early Career scientists at UVM/UVM MC, please forward this e-mail to them and encourage them to apply. Successful applicants will join an active committee involved in CVRI activities and benefit from close interactions with their peers and with senior investigators. For more information, contact CVRI-VT@med.uvm.edu

  • Application Deadline The Richard L. Byyny Fellow in Leadership Award : 3/11. Recipients will receive a $30,000 fellowship to be used for further development of their leadership skills through a specific year-long project. Read More here…
  • Application Deadline Hope Babette Tang Humanism in Healthcare Essay Contest: 3/12. Six winners (three medical students and three nursing students) will receive a monetary award ($1,000 for first place, $500 for second place, and $250 for third place). Their essays will be published in Academic Medicine, the journal of the Association of American Medical Colleges, and The Journal of Professional Nursing, of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. M1 STUDENTS (co2028)

  • Jumpstart VIC Summer Teaching Assistants Needed: Course Runs July 14th - August 1st, 2025. Two paid positions available to help run TBL sessions in Jumpstart VIC: gain teaching skills and brush up on your basic sciences. We have two openings for rising 2nd year medical students to serve as Teaching Assistants for the 2025 Jumpstart VIC pre-matriculation course. The TA position will encompass 4 weeks beginning July 7th and ending August 1st. Your compensation will be $20 per hour for up to 35 hours per week. Dr. Stephen Everse is the course director and will be your functional supervisor. TAs will help design sessions, work with student small groups, and help run online and in-person TBL sessions. It’s a great way to gain teaching skills and brush up on your basic sciences. Jumpstart TA positions are jointly funded by the Offices of Medical Education and Inclusive Excellence. M2 STUDENTS (co2027)

  • DEADLINE Given Locker Clean Out ACTION REQUIRED: Deadline:03/31 is the deadline to clean out your Given Lockers. Please remember to clean out your Given Lockers before the 03/31/25 deadline. Failure to do so before the deadline will result in a $50 cleaning fee. The Office of Medical Education require rising Clerkship level students to have their Given Lockers cleaned out by March 31, 2025, prior to entering their clerkship year or before leaving for any away rotations to prepare for the next class. Please contact Beth Stinebring , the OME Administrative Coordinator, with any questions or concerns.  

M3 STUDENTS (co2026)

  • Entering Advanced Integration Checklist: Please complete now! Please log into OASIS and complete the Entering Advanced Integration Checklist. We have deployed a requirement checklist for your class to complete prior to entering Advanced Integration. Please attend to these items by March 18. If you have questions, or any issues while completing the checklist, please let us know.
  • Application Deadline UVM Larner College of Medicine Dean’s Medical Student Research Fellowships (DMSRF): 3/10 applications for the one-year Dean’s Medical Student Research Fellowship are due no later than 12 noon on March 10, 2025 and should be electronically submitted as an attached PDF file to Dr. Renee Stapleton, Director of Medical Student Research.   • The Global Health Program Introductory Meeting: March 10th, from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM EST and will be held online via Zoom, will provide an overview of Global Health at UVM, focusing on opportunities for M4 medical students. The application deadline for the Global Health Elective is March 30, 2025, and applications can be submitted online.   • Save-the-Date for Match Day! : 3/ 21, 2025, 11:45 A.M. This year’s Match Day will be held in-person in the Hoehl Gallery at Larner College of Medicine with a Hollywood, “Lights, Camera Match!” theme. Many of you have begun making plans for family and friends to join you for this important milestone in your medical school career. Tickets will not be required for guests but please be aware that there is limited capacity in the Hoehl Gallery. Overflow seating with livestream viewing will be available in HSRF 200, HSRF 300 and the Sullivan Classroom. Match Day will be recorded. The link to the livestream will be shared with the Class of 2025 as Match Day approaches. If you or a guest attending Match Day needs an ASL interpreter or other accommodations, including accessible parking, please contact Liz Dohrman by February 28 with the specific services you or your guest need. Class of 2025 students participating in Match Day should arrive at the lobby outside the Sullivan Classroom at 11:00 A.M. on March 21. The class will process from the lobby, through Given, into the Hoehl Gallery. Match Day will begin with brief remarks shortly after 11:45, with names being called for envelope distribution beginning at 12pm. With many members of the class participating in Match Day, we ask thar those announcing on stage limit remarks to include your name, who is on stage with you, what specialty you applied to and where you matched. 
  • Application Deadline Howe Award for Excellence in Surgery: Deadline 03/31. Established Harry Howe, MD '52, this award ($1000) will recognize a student for excellence in the field. To be considered submit an essay (<1000 words) on " The Attributes of an Outstanding Physician" along with a brief personal statement. Submit to Lisa Washburn, Surgery Student Coordinator 
  • Complete the Graduation Questionnaire!!: Bonus MEGA Prize Drawing! If we can get to 90% completion of the GQ by Match Day, we will draw a BONUS MEGA Prize winner!! That's a $50 gift card to a restaurant or vendor of the winner's choice! Entering is easy. Graduate students are highly sought tenants in the Burlington area and property owners often advertise specifically to them with special rates (less than would be offered to undergraduate students). Don't hesitate to ask housing contacts if they would consider lowering the advertised rate to secure a graduate student; it never hurts to ask!

Lost & Found

Lost something? Email the Office of Medical Student Education (OMSE) a description of the item. OMSE and the Dana Medical Library recently joined the UVM campus-wide lost & found system and search not only the College of Medicine, but campus as a whole to see if it's been turned in. If it hasn't, the office can file a claim for the item should someone turn it in soon!

Found something? Please turn it into either the Office of Medical Student Education (Given Courtyard n100) or the Dana Medical Library (First floor of the Medical Education Center) and we will be sure to log it into the Campus-Wide Lost & Found Database.

Found items are kept up to 30 days, and then are donated to various local organizations depending on the item.
