Community Connections
  • There have been many changes in federal immigration policy since January 2025.  Notably, certain areas (schools, hospitals, churches) are no longer exempt from immigration enforcement.  Students and faculty have asked appropriate questions on how these changes impact us at the University and in our clinical training environments The Vermont Medical Society has put together a helpful site with resources to answer many of your questions: Resources to Assist you and Your Patients with Immigration Enforcement, Flow sheet for interacting with immigration enforcement. As learners in the clinical environment, you should immediately contact your supervising attending physician if you are approached by immigration enforcement agents.

  • Medical Student Survey. This survey explores attitudes and intentions towards people experiencing homelessness: The University of Central Florida College of Medicine is conducting a research study that aims to assess medical students' attitudes toward people experiencing homelessness. The survey will ultimately help evaluate the impact of various interventions on students' perspectives, helping to improve education on homelessness in medical school and promote compassion amongst medical trainees. It takes 30 minutes or less to complete and is fully confidential. Participants will receive a $5 Amazon gift card from UCF’s Office of Planning and Knowledge Management.   • Dean Zehle Drop In Meetings - Sign Up!: 4/16 12-1PM These drop-ins are provided for students to connect with Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education. We protect student drop-in sessions to ensure our students can discuss any arising issues or concerns, and to ensure your dean is always accessible to you. You can secure a 20-minute slot during the provided drop-in hours, using the Dean for Medical Education drop-ins sign-up. .   • Volunteer at Kids Fest: 4/26, 10AM-1PM, YMCA Burlington. The event includes fun activities and education focused on health and safety for children and families in the Burlington area. The UVM Children’s Hospital is a partner, and they give out bicycle helmets to children. This link includes a flyer with details and volunteer sign up form. Medical students who sign up to volunteer should indicate that they are medical students in question 9 on the form.

  • UVM Student Research Conference:4/23; 10:30 am – 5:00 pm; Davis Center | Grand Maple Ballroom. Opportunity to showcase your research. Open to any UVM undergraduate, graduate, or medical student, the Student Research Conference, hosted by the Fellowships, Opportunities, and Undergraduate Research (FOUR) Office, showcases hundreds of students' research all day at the Davis Center.   • 6th Annual Otolaryngology Virtual Chautauqua: Every Thursday from May 8, 2025, through July 10, 2025 from 7:30 to 9:00 PM EDT. The University of Buffalo will sponsor talks by otolaryngologists geared to prepare students for otolaryngology rotations and content.   • Conference Funding Available: The Burke Foundation Gift is to support registration and travel costs for a medical student of any year in training interested in attending a conference in addiction medicine, substance use disorders and/or mental health. Scholarship Opportunities
  • 2025 Stanley M. Kaplan Essay Award for medical students: Deadline Oct 1, 2025. The winner will receive a cash prize of $500 and two runners-up will be awarded $250 each. Winners will be announced in November 2025. Read More here...  

M1 STUDENTS (co2028)

  • Call for M1 Tutors Open: OME is currently accepting Tutor Interest Form submissions until 10am on May 30th to identify a balanced cohort of co2028 active peer tutor candidates, covering a comprehensive set of pre-clinical services and content specialties. Note: The peer tutoring program has a limited number of active spaces to fill for an August 2025 start (n=11).  For more information, please refer to the introduction of the Tutor Interest Form. 
  • OME Summer Internship Opportunities: Summer, 2025. Various teams are looking for students to apply for this paid internship. This summer there are opportunities to work with the Foundations, Admissions, Student Services, and the Learning Environment teams in the Office of Medical Education.   • Medical Education Thematic Working Group is looking for a Student Rep- deadline Monday, April 28th at 12PM. The Thematic Working Group is a working group of the Medical Curriculum Committee (MCC) and is looking for a class representative from the class of 2028. The Charge of this group is to review the location (horizontal and vertical integration), quantity, and quality of thematic content in the curriculum, (ex. reproductive rights, EBMs, Palliative Care, etc.) and making recommendations for curriculum improvements to the Medical Curriculum Committee. Topics change quarterly at the recommendation of the working group and/or MCC, and meetings are held monthly. If interested, please forward a paragraph/statement of interest to Colleen Case no later than Monday, April 28 at noon. M2 STUDENTS (co2027)

  • Shelf Exam Success Recommendation Checklist: A compiled Academic Achievement list of tips, strategies, and considerations for co2027 shelf exam preparation planning: Link to Checklist.  This checklist can also be found along with other resources in the Clerkship Academic Success Planning page of the Academic Achievement Commons.  The checklist covers all things clerkship shelf: question bank, voucher requests, timing of self-assessments, supplemental resources. 
  • Shelf Resources: A reminder that the Dana Library has some e-book and print books that may be helpful for shelf exams, test-taking and developing clinical knowledge: The Subject Exam link has supplemental resources for each clinical rotation (e.g., Case Files series, Step-up series); the Step 2 Exam link has an e-book "Test-taking Strategies for the USMLE Step 2".  Want to learn more about strategically approaching NBME clinical knowledge questions? M3 STUDENTS (co2026)

  • UB Plastic Surgery Research Fellowship: now. The University at Buffalo 1-year funded Research Fellowship for M3's looking to take a dedicated research year. The individual in this position will work closely with the faculty and residents in the University at Buffalo's Division of Plastic Surgery. The primary responsibility will be to assist with and generate research for the division. This is a 1 Year, Scholarship Funded Position (12 months), July 1 Start Date.     • DUTIES INCLUDED BUT NOT LIMITIED TO:  
      • Collaborations with PI and co-investigators to develop research protocols  
      • Conduct literature searches

      • Produce abstracts, manuscripts and poster presentations for submission/presentation at Regional or National meetings
      • Attend Regional/National meetings (funding provided) as needed to support/present accepted research

    • BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
      • US Medical Student in good standing between M3 years and M4 years
      • Interest in Plastic Surgery  
      • Self-Motivated and able to work independently on multiple projects

  • Rainbow Graduation 2025! Rainbow Graduation is a time to celebrate our graduating community members at the close of their time at the University. Each degree candidate is eligible to receive up to six tickets. You will receive an email from Academic_Ceremonies@uvm.edu in your UVM email (NOT your MED.UVM.EDU) account on Friday, March 28. The email will include a link to the University of Vermont University Tickets web page where you will be asked to log in with your UVM Net ID and password. Once logged in, degree candidates will be able to reserve their tickets and print them out at any time and/or send them to their family and friends. Lost & Found

Lost something? Email the Office of Medical Student Education (OMSE) a description of the item. OMSE and the Dana Medical Library recently joined the UVM campus-wide lost & found system and search not only the College of Medicine, but campus as a whole to see if it's been turned in. If it hasn't, the office can file a claim for the item should someone turn it in soon!

Found something? Please turn it into either the Office of Medical Student Education (Given Courtyard n100) or the Dana Medical Library (First floor of the Medical Education Center) and we will be sure to log it into the Campus-Wide Lost & Found Database.

Found items are kept up to 30 days, and then are donated to various local organizations depending on the item.
