Weekly Wire Banner

January 17 - 23, 2022

The WeeklyWire is an official communication tool of the Larner College of Medicine. Student feedback led to its development and continues to inform iterative improvements. All non-curriculum-related email communications are directed through the Wire to help support manageable email inboxes for our students; it's your one-stop-shop for all med school happenings outside of the classroom! Please do not hesitate to contact the Office of Medical Student Education with any questions.

COMMUNITY WELLNESS

Be sure to review this section for any announcements regarding student wellness! If you ever have any questions about this section, it's postings, or any wellness topics, please do not hesitate to contact our Director of Student Well-being, Dr. Lee Rosen or reach out to one of your Larner College of Medicine Wellness Committee representatives.

THIS WEEK:

  • FREE Yoga Series: Classes will be held 01/19-04/01, 2022. UVM Campus Rec Yoga School is looking for people who would like to host a FREE 6-week yoga series with a yoga-teacher-in-training. Host is responsible for securing a room or organizing a virtual class, and getting students to attend. If interested, please contact John McConnell, Director of the UVM Yoga Teacher Training.
  • Swim Lessons: Vermont Swim School swim lessons begin January 23. Registration is now open. Choose between group lessons for ages 4-8, private lessons for ages 4 and up, or stroke development for ages 9 and up. It's never too late to learn how to swim...

UPCOMING:

ADDITIONAL WELL-BEING RESOURCES:

  • ADHD Student Group Therapy: The training clinic in the psychology department (Vermont Psychological Services) is offering a great opportunity to participate in empirically supported CBT for ADHD in a small group setting.  They are recruiting both undergraduate and graduate students, and the group will meet once a week in the evenings. Please call the number listed if you have questions, and one of the co-therapists will call you back. Dr. Lee Rosen is also glad to answer any questions about this.
  • UVM COVID-19 Mandatory Testing (VT-Campus): All medical students are required to complete a day-0 and day-5/6/7 test, and you are encouraged to continue surveillance testing twice weekly. Read more about spring COVID-19 requirements in this 01/04 email to all UVM students, and in this 01/02 email from your Dean for Medical Education.
    • If you are symptomatic, please do not go to public testing centers. Contact UVM Student Health Services at 802-656-3350 to schedule a test or reach out to your Primary Care Physician.
    • Students not local to Chittenden County: Simply submit an exemption from testing for the weeks in January they are away, and plan to test when they return to the area. As a reminder, the testing exemption form can only be accessed/used with UVM credentials (NOT MED credentials).
    • If you tested positive for COVID-19 within the past 90 days: Submit an exemption from testing under the category “medical reason” and outline your positive test date and isolation protocol you followed.

LCOMcares - WAYS TO HELP/VOLUNTEER

We are sharing opportunities and needs in the State of Vermont. The University of Vermont has not vetted or researched these opportunities and cannot warrant or recommend one opportunity over another. It is your sole responsibility to thoroughly evaluate any volunteer organization or opportunity before engaging. Please practice physical distancing and follow the established guidelines to keep yourself and your community safe. Consider the following opportunities independently and carefully after looking into the organization and their safety practices.

THIS WEEK:

  • January is National Mentoring Month! Big Brothers and Sisters ("Bigs") are needed throughout Vermont and this is a great time to get started! There are currently 95 Littles waiting for their Big and a variety of ways that you can participate. Contact them at info@bbbsvt.org / 802-689-0092 to learn more, or visit their website.

Housing Opportunities

Graduate students are highly sought tenants in the Burlington area and property owners often advertise specifically to them with special rates (less than would be offered to undergraduate students). Don't hesitate to ask housing contacts if they would consider lowering the advertised rate to secure a graduate student; it never hurts to ask!

Explore housing opportunities & housing support resources via the UVM Off-campus Housing Site...

UVM Off-Campus Housing Resource List: This resource, developed out of the UVM Office of Student & Community Relations (OSCR) includes many helpful resources for Burlington Area housing (UVM/MED credentials required)...

Lost & Found

Lost something? Email the Office of Medical Student Education (OMSE) a description of the item. OMSE and the Dana Medical Library recently joined the UVM campus-wide lost & found system and search not only the College of Medicine, but campus as a whole to see if it's been turned in. If it hasn't, the office can file a claim for the item should someone turn it in soon!

Found something? Please turn it into either the Office of Medical Student Education (Given Courtyard n100) or the Dana Medical Library (First floor of the Medical Education Center) and we will be sure to log it into the Campus-Wide Lost & Found Database.

Found items are kept up to 30 days, and then are donated to various local organizations depending on the item.
