Mawe Says Donated Cadavers Teach Life Lessons, Seven Days Reports

(OCTOBER 26, 2022) Professor of Neurological Sciences Gary Mawe, Ph.D., director of Larner’s Anatomical Gift Program, spoke to Seven Days about the pedagogical value of having medical students dissect real human cadavers in the College’s anatomy lab. Larner receives some 30 to 50 body donations a year.

(OCTOBER 26, 2022) Professor of Neurological Sciences Gary Mawe, Ph.D., director of the Larner College of Medicine’s Anatomical Gift Program, spoke to Seven Days about the pedagogical value of having medical students dissect real human cadavers in the College’s anatomy lab rather than using what are today quite sophisticated 3D virtual dissection programs. Medical students, health professionals, and clinical specialists rely on the generosity of donors to the program to study the structure of the human body and acquire research and patient care expertise; Mawe said Larner receives between 30 and 50 body donations a year. It is not uncommon for medical students to see their experience in the lab as valuable training not only in the mechanics of the body, but also in the emotional and psychological demands of their chosen field.
