Congratulations Teaching Academy Members!

Danielle Ehret, MD, MPH,Teaching Academy Member and Associate Professor of Pediatrics, has been selected as a 2024–25 Fellow for Executive Leadership in Healthcare (ELH). The fellowship prepares women for senior leadership positions in health care organizations, where they can influence positive change.  Read more.

Katharine Cheung, MD, PhD, MSc, Teaching Academy Expert Teacher and Interim Director of the UVM Center on Aging and assistant professor of medicine, and her mentee, medical student Susanna Schuler ’26, presented their research on tele-palliative care for rural dialysis patients at the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine State of the Science meeting in Phoenix this spring.

Teaching Academy Distinguished Educator and Associate Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Bei Zhang, MD, PhD, MLS(ASCP), presented at the recent 2024 IAMSE Annual Conference in Minneapolis, MN. Master Adaptive Teachers: Mastering the Art of Teacher-Student Interaction - The Cornerstone of High-Quality Medical Education presented by Voicu Ciobanu, MD; Bei Zhang, MD, PhD, MLS(ASCP), Raquel Ritchie, PhD; Qing Zhong, MD, PhD; Maisie Laud, Victoria Cruz, Robert Hayden Meeks.

Bronwyn Bryant, MD, Teaching Academy Expert Teacher and Associate Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, was named the next Buttles Chair. The Buttles Chair was established in 1978 with contributions principally from the College of Medicine Alumni and the University Associates in Pathology. It honors Ernest Hiram Buttles, a member of the Department of Pathology, and Chair of the Department from 1921 to 1946. The recipient of the Buttles Professorship is a faculty member who has performed in an exemplary fashion in teaching and serves as a model for others in the College of Medicine. Further, the recipient is expected to contribute actively to the teaching programs of the Department and pursue educational scholarship activities during the time that the recipient holds the Buttles Chair.

Whole Health for People and Planet: A Planetary Health Summit

Hosted by the Osher Center for Integrative Health at the University of Vermont. October 16 - 17, 2024. UVM has launched a University Wide Planetary Health Initiative that explores these connections and inspires action so that both people and planet can thrive. This “Whole Health for People and Planet” Summit is meant to offer a space for members of both the Osher Collaborative and the UVM community to come together to explore inspirational opportunities that can help overcome current challenges to human and planetary health. Apply to be a Macy Faculty Scholar

The Macy Faculty Scholars Program, now in its second decade, aims to identify and nurture promising early-career educators in medicine and nursing. The program will help develop the next generation of national leaders in medical and nursing education by identifying outstanding educators, physicians, nurses, and role models—individuals who represent the breadth of diversity seen in learners, patient populations, and health care settings around the country. By providing the Scholars with resources—especially protected time, mentorship, and a professional network of colleagues—the program aims to accelerate Scholars’ careers, to turn their teaching practice into scholarship, and to help them become impactful leaders locally, nationally, and beyond. AAMC launches accessibility resources collection

A new collection in the AAMC Virtual Communities features resources from the AAMC and across academic medicine on creating accessible presentations, web content, teaching materials, and other resources on fostering an inclusive learning environment. The collection also highlights information about joining fellow educators, leaders, and disability resource professionals in the new Disability Inclusion community, along with related scholarship, virtual events, podcasts, and videos. 2025 Emerging Technologies for Teaching and Learning: Digital Demonstrations Virtual Conference

This inaugural virtual event, taking place February 5-6, is designed to highlight innovative projects, tools, and educational technology solutions through interactive demonstrations. The demonstrated products and solutions should offer successful strategies and tools developed to support effective teaching and learning. With educational technology established as a strategic asset essential to the growth and success of medical schools and teaching hospitals, both nationally and internationally, this conference offers valuable peer learning and networking opportunities to showcase how you are leveraging innovative educational technology tools to solve problems at your institutions. The Program Planning Committee is seeking proposals for digital demonstrations across a variety of topics related to emerging technologies for teaching and learning.   • Ehret Selected for 2024–25 Class of Executive Leadership in Health Care Fellows

    Danielle Ehret, M.D., M.P.H., associate professor of pediatrics, has been selected as a member of the 2024–25 class of fellows in the Executive Leadership in Health Care (ELH) program. The prestigious fellowship provides funding, sponsorship, and protected time to support the fellow’s advancement and opportunities for increased responsibility to bring their full potential to health care organizations. Candidates aspire to lead at the executive level, such as a chief officer. Ehret serves chief medical officer for the Vermont Oxford Network.

Welcome Director of Evaluation and Assessment: Yichen Zhao, PhD

Dr. Yichen Zhao obtained her PhD degree in Educational Psychology & Quantitative Methods from the State University of New York at Buffalo (UB) in 2023. She is proficient in conducting quantitative and qualitative research, with a specialization in statistical analysis techniques, survey development and validation, as well as conducting cross-sectional or longitudinal studies.

Prior to her role at LCOM, she served as an Institutional Research Analyst at the City University of New York – City College for a short time, where she collaborated with the Institutional Research team to meet stakeholders' data needs. Additionally, she held positions at the UB School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences for six years, focusing on conducting assessment and evaluation of PharmD students' learning outcomes and accreditation.

Having lived in New York City for three years, she recently relocated to South Burlington with her boyfriend and their two cats, Miyoko (11 years old) and Mochi (8 years old). She enjoys painting, creating video blogs, photography, and workout in her free time, and she eagerly anticipates resuming her skiing adventures in the winter this year.
