Education

Pediatrics imageMedical student education is an essential mission of the Department and one that we relish. Our goal is to ensure that all students at The Robert Larner, M.D. College of Medicine at The University of Vermont understand children and their families, including the importance of community and culture in health and illness.

Medical Student Education

The faculty in the Department of Pediatrics participate in all aspects of the Vermont Integrated Curriculum.

In Foundations, Pediatric faculty members direct courses (Attacks and Defenses), facilitate in the small group weekly course Professionalism, Communication and Reflection, precept new students in their first pediatric clinical experiences  (Doctoring in Vermont) and lead sessions and small group discussions on a variety of pediatric topics.

During Advanced Integration (the post-clerkship phase), the Department offers one-month acting internships at The University of Vermont Children's Hospital in Neonatology, Pediatric Intensive Care, and General Inpatient Pediatric Medicine. A host of senior selectives in primary care or subspecialty medicine is also available. For students planning to apply to pediatric residency, a longitudinal Pediatric Concentration course meets throughout the final year, culminating in a Pediatric Boot Camp prior to graduation.

For students who are possibly considering Pediatrics as a career choice, the Pediatric Special Interest Group (led by 2nd year students and mentored by faculty members) meets regularly and hosts a variety of events and activities related to pediatrics and child health. Students at any level are welcome to attend.

Faculty in the Department are more than happy to serve as mentors or advisors to students interested in Pediatrics.
