(NOVEMBER 18, 2022) Associate Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Christina Wojewoda, M.D., who is the director of clinical microbiology at the UVM Medical Center and chairs the Microbiology Committee for the College of American Pathologists, commented for a Georgia Public Broadcasting story on monkeypox in that state. While cases are slowing, Georgia still ranks third in per capita cases nationwide, with most of those happening in Atlanta. The monkeypox virus can only be confirmed by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lab testing after a state department of health has reason to suspect it, Wojewoda said. Officials must make sure that the signs, symptoms, and presentation are consistent before testing is sent from the state lab to the CDC.
