from the Chair
With a legacy reaching back over a century, one of the first anesthesiology residency training programs in the country, and recognition as national and international leaders in anesthesia, particularly concerning the use of spinal anesthesia in infants, we are the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Vermont Medical Center within the University of Vermont Health Network.
Our Department is deeply committed to:
- Providing high quality, safe, evidence-informed, and compassionate clinical care to our patients and their family members;
- Educating medical students, residents, fellows, and ourselves in the best practices of anesthesiology perioperative, critical care, and pain medicine clinical care delivery so as to readily adapt and succeed in a rapidly shifting modern health care environment;
- Completing research to fundamentally advance the science and practice of medicine; and
- Engaging with our local, regional, and national community to promote equitable and effective delivery of clinical medical care and medical education.
Our 45 attending physician anesthesiologists have a diverse array of training backgrounds, clinical interests, and expertise. We also work closely with 30 certified nurse anesthetists and anesthesiologist assistants and 26 residents and fellows to together provide more than 25.000 anesthetics per year.
We are proud of our Departmental history and encourage you to research it further through the book Anesthesia at the House: An Illustrated History of Anesthesia at the University of Vermont, authored by our Deparrtment historian, Joseph Kreutz, M.D.
It is an immense privilege and honor to lead this incredible, kind, collegial, and dedicated interprofessional team. Thank you for your interest in our Department and please do not hesitate to contact myself and/or the Department of Anesthesiology administrative team with any further questions or inquiries.
