Visiting Student Elective Scholarship Program (VSESP)

2nd Year Rotation

The University of Vermont, Department of Radiology is excited to invite students, including those from historically underrepresented and underserved populations in medical school, to apply to the radiology Visiting Student Elective Scholarship Program (VSESP) funded 2^nd year rotation, beginning in July, 2024.  Please apply for the elective via VSLO in addition to your VSESP application.  Thank you for your interest in our program. 

The VSESP in Radiology, sponsored by the Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion and the Department of Radiology at the University of Vermont will offer one student elective positions during the July 2024, with housing provided and a $1,500 stipend for reimbursement of travel, housing, meals, books and registration fees.

Eligibility and Application Process

• 2^nd year medical students in good standing at an accredited U.S. medical school.
• Apply for a rotation through the Visiting Student Learning Opportunities Program. E-mail Zachary (Zachary.Burbano@uvmhealth.org), the Radiology VSESP Coordinator.
• A letter of interest (500 words or less), addressing their interest in pursuing a career in radiology and how their unique perspectives and lived experiences will contribute to diversity in medicine and the elimination of health disparities. Please also relay any unique socioeconomic circumstances.

Overview

The University of Vermont, Department of Radiology is in Burlington, Vermont, is a new American Community with increasing racial and ethnic diversity.

One visiting rotation, 4 weeks in length, will be offered beginning July, 2024

In this course students will spend one week each in up to four different radiology subspecialties (upon availability). This experience is specifically designed to introduce 2^nd year students to the field of radiology who are considering the specialty as a career and desire an experience at UVM.

Students will become more familiar with the fundamental principles of imaging, pertinent anatomy and pathology, image interpretation, appropriateness and contraindications of imaging studies, and the general role of imaging in the clinical arena.

Students will spend each day shadowing side by side with the attending radiologist and the radiology resident at the sub-specialty clinical workstation. Radiology staff will review the cases of the day, teaching general principles of radiology, pertinent anatomy and pathology, and interpretation of imaging exams. The team will work together and with the referring physicians to gather additional patient information and make suggestions about other imaging modalities to help in solving the clinical problem.

All students will attend didactic and case-based conferences 2 - 3 hours per day. Students will spend one day with the Radiology technologist rotating through all of the imaging modalities. All students will be expected to research and write up an interesting case, which will be presented to the Radiology attendings and residents on the last Wednesday of the elective.

While participating in VSESP, visiting students are invited to attend a variety of teaching sessions alongside the radiology residents.

There will be no overnight or weekend shifts for visiting students.

Feedback and Evaluation

A Standardized Letter of Evaluation (SLOE) will be completed for all our visiting students, written and signed by the Program Director.  Grades for purposes of the SLOE will be Honors, High Pass, Pass, and Fail.  Grades for transcript purposes will be based on each student’s home institution grade options.
