ID Fellowship in Vermont
Fellowship at UVM offers the opportunity to work at an outstanding tertiary care medical center complete with the resources of an adjoining college and medical school while still enjoying the charms of small town life and easy access to the outdoors. Burlington hosts a number of refugees from parts of south Asia and eastern Africa, diversifying both local communities and clinical experiences. We will not bore you with a list of Vermont and Burlington’s accolades in the realm of “great places to live” and “best cities for outdoor recreation” but hope you take time to briefly explore local points of pride to include everything from one of the nation’s top rated public school systems to one of its most beloved ice cream manufacturers (Ben and Jerry’s).
Many of us walk or cycle to work, and the bus is free for UVM faculty/fellows. Fellows are provided covered parking in the medical center garage at no charge. The medical center’s multiple dining options feature fresh produce from the hospital gardens and you can pick up staples from the in-hospital weekly farmers market near the lobby.
From the Infectious Disease clinic the windows face a panorama of the Green Mountains where the summits of Mt. Mansfield and Camel’s Hump dominate the landscape. Between them one can see the slopes of Bolton Valley Ski Resort – the nearest ski lift is 30 minutes from the hospital and there are a dozen more within an hour’s drive. Miles upon miles of beautiful hiking and biking trails exist within the same sphere. On the other side of the hospital opposite the mountains sits Lake Champlain where one can dabble in a variety of water activities from sailing to fishing in the shadow of the Adirondack Mountains. Burlington is a place where you can get outside before and/or after work, not just on weekends.
For modern cosmopolitan amenities, Burlington boasts numerous excellent restaurants, world-class breweries, Trader Joe’s, Target etc… Those of us who occasionally miss the bright lights of the big city are close enough to Montreal (1.5h), Boston (3h) and New York(5h) for weekend getaways.
In sum: compared to the areas surrounding many major hospitals, Burlington is a very nice place to live.

Jean Dejace, M.D.
Jean joined the UVM ID group in 2017. He is originally from New Orleans, where he was in college and medical school at Tulane, then completed Med/Peds residency at Baystate Medical Center in MA before ID fellowship at Maine Medical Center in Portland, ME. Although Jean has fully adopted the life of the northern New Englander, he keeps his Southern roots as a friendly and charming person while also being a fantastic chef (editor’s note: that is generous). Jean lives for winter and enjoys ice climbing, the alpine zone, and backcountry skiing. He is a voracious reader and a good day for him would be sitting in a tent on a snowy mountain reading about sci-fi ninjas. He is the Director of the ID Fellowship Program at UVMMC. He is well known for bringing delicious chocolate chip cookies to many an ID in person meeting. (in person of course)
