Fellowship
We offer a two-year fellowship in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism that trains clinical endocrinologists for an academic medical career. By only training two Fellows at a time, we ensure exposure to a wide range of endocrine diseases and close supervision in recognizing, diagnosing, treating, and long-term follow-up of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes mellitus, thyroid disorders, pituitary disease, adrenal disease, reproductive endocrinology disorders, electrolyte disorders, and metabolic bone disease. Elective opportunities in more specialized areas, including lipid disorders, reproductive endocrinology, pediatric endocrinology, podiatry, and ophthalmology, round out the experience of our Fellows. In this brief video, our faculty and our 2016-2018 Fellow, Amanda Fernandes, MD, review the advantages of a small fellowship program, including our innovative program in thyroid ultrasound.
Our Fellows organize and present the weekly Endocrine Grand Rounds conferences and are active participants in the education of medical students, interns, and residents at the Larner College of Medicine. We also encourage our Fellows to participate in community events, including "Diabetes Day" sponsored by UVM Medical Center. Here, Kaitlyn Vennard Barrett, DO, our 2017-2019 Fellow, was interviewed during the event by local television.
Second-year Fellows attend "Endocrine University," a week-long course held at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. The course curriculum is designed by the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists to enhance the fellows' exposure to key areas of clinical endocrinology.
Finally, we build in protected research time for Fellows to complete an independent research project, and we encourage them to publish their research and interesting clinical cases and present them at national meetings.
