Where does a musician who's also a medical student find inspiration for their next song? Scott Mitchell '20 didn't have to look far when he began to write a spunky ditty about his experience as a first-year medical student at the Larner College of Medicine. The song is titled "Second-to-None," in honor of the late Robert Larner, M.D. '42 after whom the College is named, and weaves through the first-year curriculum verse by verse with a healthy dose of wit and humor.

Mitchell has only performed the song once but hopes it will become a sort of anthem for first-year students at the College, providing them with some comic relief and a sense of comradery that will help them through the rigors of their first few months in medical school.

Second-to-None
Lyrics and Music by Scott Mitchell
Nestled in beside a lake, and harbored in the greatest state
Bursting right out through the gates, chasing knowledge and our fates
We took the Hippocratic oath, tradition of the white coat
And then we donned our stethoscopes
We're second to none, we're second to none
Here at Larner College of Medicine
She has many daughters, she has many sons
And they are all second...second to none
We 'FOCUS'd through anatomy, and held on through all A&D
NMGI agony, Neuro's a catastrophe
Hoping that we'll make it through, a few more peer and course reviews
Cause if we do we'll join the crew
We're second to none, we're second to none
Here at Larner College of Medicine
She has many daughters, she has many sons
And they are all second...second to none
Could see the fear right in our eyes, when we had to memorize
Phrenic nerve C345, keeps the diaphragm alive
To Zanzibar by motor car, these mnemonics are so bizarre
I Love Vermont, that's why we are
|----------^--------|
BCAA's
We're second to none, we're second to none
Here at Larner College of Medicine
She has many daughters, she has many sons
And they are all second...second to none
Learned the microbes on the list, and memorized glycolysis
I know the antibiotics and gluconeogenesis
Schatzki's when you're eating steak, endoscopy's a piece of cake,
Cause colons are all like snowflakes
We're second to none, we're second to none
Here at Larner College of Medicine
She has many daughters, she has many sons
And they are all second...second to none
We barely know anything, but we are pros at doctoring
All chronic coughs must be TB< weight loss is code for HIV
Its mission essential, to have a differential
But for now, its confidential...
We're second to none, we're second to none
Here at Larner College of Medicine
She has many daughters, she has many sons
And they are all second...second to none
The library is our new perch, conducting all kinds of research
Our craniums are well preserved, our brain stem has got lots of nerve
Sensory neurons can converge, we realize that our pain's referred
But then at last we reemerge
We're second to none, we're second to none
Here at Larner College of Medicine
She has many daughters, she has many sons
And they are all second...second to none
Studying the day away, and at night I lay awake
Dreaming of a great escape, on the day I graduate
We still have to learn a ton, but when it is all said and done
Remember when we were M1's
We're second to none, we're second to none
Here at Larner College of Medicine
She has many daughters, she has many sons
And they are all second...second to none
