Integrative Medicine SIG - Acupuncture and Maternal Obesity

November 27, 2018 by Madi Wood

Acupuncture and maternal obesity were the topic of the integrative medicine Student Interest Group’s (SIG) presentation today. UVM Medical Center OB/GYN resident and endocrinology researcher David Carr, M.D., Ph.D., gave an overview of acupuncture and insulin resistance before honing in on his specific topic. Carr is the editor-in-chief of Acupuncture in Medicine (published by the British Medical Journal) and has been working with Professor of Medicine Tom Jetton, Ph.D., to study the use of electroacupuncture in treating gestational diabetes. SIG leaders Shae Rowlandson and  Sarah French thought the topic would be appropriate for second-year  UVM future docs who are currently studying in the Human Development and Reproductive Health course. Additionally, they hoped to offer an opportunity to other UVM medical students to learn about acupuncture.
