The Robert Larner, M.D. College of Medicine at the University of Vermont has a remarkable community that provides ample opportunities to connect with fellow graduate students, postdocs, staff, and faculty.   • Cushman Quoted in U.S. News on Blood Type & Blood Clot Risk Study

    Mary Cushman, M.D., M.Sc., UVM professor of medicine and director of the Thrombosis and Hemostasis Program at the UVM Medical Center, commented on an Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology study on the potential increased risk of blood clots in people with blood types A and B in U.S. News & World Report.
  • Improving Care for Newborns Around the World

    In Ethiopia, 28 of every 1,000 babies die within their first 28 days of life, a stark contrast to an infant mortality rate in the United States and other high-income countries of about four deaths for every 1,000 live births. The Ethiopian Pediatric Society and the country’s Ministry of Health want to cut those infant death rates to 12 per 1,000 by 2030 to reach the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, and they have turned to the Vermont Oxford Network (VON) for help. VON, based in Burlington, collects data from neonatal intensive care units to find ways to improve the quality of care for newborns.

    The Larner College of Medicine biomedical research enterprise received another boost on January 31 when the members of the University of Vermont Board of Trustees voted unanimously to approve construction of the Firestone Medical Research Building.

    Glenn Goldman, M.D., professor of medicine and chief of dermatology, was invested as the inaugural Rogers and Nancy Follansbee Professor of Dermatology during a formal ceremony held February 3, 2020 at the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont.
  • College Announces New Medical Student Research Fellowships

    Larner College of Medicine medical students who are interested in taking a deeper dive into research have a new opportunity: The College's Medical Student Research Fellowships. Announced January 31, the program offers two one-year research fellowships to be conducted between the third and fourth years of medical school. Applications are due by no later than March 20, 2020 at 5:00 p.m.
  • Foundations Awards Celebration Honors Class of 2022, Faculty, & Staff

    Lee Rosen, Ph.D., assistant professor psychiatry and director of student well-being, recently published an essay, titled “Tumbling into Mindfulness–A Novice at Age 50,” in the November 2019 issue of The Snowboarder’s Journal. His essay explores how learning to snowboard as an adult forced him to practice the “growth mindset” he teaches to students and patients.

  • Teaching Teamwork and Collaboration in the Health Sciences

    In the fall of 2019, more than 400 students from different health science professions came together over the course of three evening sessions to care for a dying patient—virtually. Medical and nursing students, physical therapy doctoral candidates, social workers-in-training, speech pathology trainees and pharmacy students from the Albany College of Pharmacy watched standardized patients on screen as they played the roles of a patient with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, family members, and health care providers.

    (NOVEMBER 19, 2019) Coverage of the U.S. News & World Report's Healthcare of Tomorrow conference in Washington, D.C., included quotes from Alicia Jacobs, M.D., vice chair and associate professor of family medicine, who served on a panel addressing the opioid crisis and how hospitals and healthcare providers are approaching this epidemic. Jacobs discussed how the University of Vermont Medical Center began to address the opioid crisis and what steps they are taking to help the crisis.     On Wednesday, December 11, 2019, the University of Vermont Graduate College and UVM Graduate Student Senate hosted the annual Graduate Hooding Ceremony at the Ira Allen Chapel. Among the attendees were 14 master and doctor of philosophy graduates from the UVM Larner College of Medicine. They are part of a cohort of 41 students graduating from the College's master and doctor of philosophy programs in the 2019-2020 academic year.
  • Gramling Study Finds Machine Learning Illuminates End-of-Life Conversations

    Researchers at the University of Vermont’s Vermont Conversation Lab, including Miller Chair of Palliative Medicine Robert Gramling, M.D., D.Sc., have used machine learning and natural language processing to better understand what conversations surrounding life-threatening and serious illnesses look like, in order to help healthcare providers improve their end-of-life communication. Their work was published December 9 in the journal Patient Education and Counselling.
