Kaminsky Quoted in Seven Days Story on Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Long COVID

(JANUARY 18, 2023) David Kaminsky, M.D., professor of medicine, a pulmonologist and critical care physician who routinely sees patients with long COVID symptoms, was quoted in a Seven Days story about the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) for patients suffering from so-called long COVID.

(JANUARY 18, 2023) David Kaminsky, M.D., professor of medicine, a pulmonologist and critical care physician who routinely sees patients with long COVID symptoms, was quoted in a Seven Days story about the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) for patients suffering from so-called long COVID. Kaminsky told Seven Days that patients should exercise caution when trying any non-FDA-approved therapies — the FDA considers HBOT “off label” (that is, legal only with a doctor’s prescription) as a treatment for long COVID — however, he added, “It looks like HBOT is relatively safe, and there is biological rationale to support it being helpful.” Peter Moses, M.D., a now-retired UVMMC gastroenterologist and professor of medicine emeritus, and Joseph McSherry, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of neurological sciences, questioned HBOT’s alleged benefits when Seven Days first wrote about HBOT in 2017.
