Dr. Mertz, core faculty in Family Medicine at UVM and member of the UVM Global Health Leadership Team, discovered global health by following her own curiosity. When, as a third year medical student, she felt her career had been limited to answering questions without asking her own, she decided to travel through Asia piecing together medical work with the sociopolitical history of the region.

However, she felt upon return that she had benefited while the people she had encountered had not. Since then, she has focused her work on fostering ethical curiosity and finding sustainable, bidirectional engagements with global health. Through her work with students and residents, Dr. Mertz actively promotes the importance of global health experiences for the next generation of healthcare providers.
