The University of Vermont's Medical Reunion has been transformed into a 10-day online celebration for 2020. The event, which runs from October 1 through 10, allows Larner College of Medicine alumni from across the country and globe to gather safely in a virtual setting that offers a full slate of activities.

While attendees cannot be on campus in person, the event promises to bring the campus and camaraderie of classmates and faculty friends to alumni virtually, through such beloved activities as the 50th Reunion Medallion Ceremony, Medical Alumni Association Awards, “State of the College” Address, Virtual College Tours, and a Med Student Panel. The online event kicked off October 1 with the Vito Imbasciani, Ph.D., M.D.'85 and George DiSalvo LGBTQ Health Equity Lecture on "An Intersectional Approach to LGBTQI Healthcare” by Lourdes Dolores Follins, Ph.D., LCSW-R, author of Black LGBT Health in the United States: The Intersection of Race, Gender, and Sexual Orientation.

Highlights on October 2 included the UVM Cancer Center’s Women’s Health and Cancer Conference (find more info here), a presentation on diversity, equity and inclusion at the College, a Town Hall with UVM President Garimella, the Class of 2024 White Coat Ceremony, and the 50^th Reunion Medallion Ceremony.

Sessions on October 3 included an Alumni Town Hall on the State of the College with Larner Dean Richard L. Page, M.D., a presentation by Dean Page and alumnus and UVM Medical Center President Stephen Leffler, M.D., on “Leading Through COVID-19 and Beyond,” and the Medical Alumni Association Awards.

This year’s awards and recipients include:

• The A. Bradley Soule Award is presented to an alumnus/a whose loyalty and dedication to the Larner College of Medicine most emulate those qualities as found in its first recipient, A. Bradley Soule, M.D.’28. This year's honoree is Frederick Mandell, M.D.'64, associate clinical professor of pediatrics, Harvard Medical School, and senior associate in medicine, Boston Children’s Hospital.
• The Distinguished Academic Achievement Award is presented to alumni in recognition of outstanding scientific or academic achievement. This year's honorees are John F. Beamis, Jr., M.D.'70, emeritus chair of the Division of Internal Medicine and emeritus chair of the Department of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the Lahey Hospital and Medical Center; Deborah Cook, M.D.’90, professor and director of dermatopathology and the Dermatopathology Fellowship Program, Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, UVM Larner College of Medicine and UVM Medical Center; Jeffrey Lawson, M.D.’90, president and CEO, Humacyte Incorporated, professor of surgery and director, Vascular Surgery Research Laboratory, Department of Surgery and Division of Vascular Surgery, and professor of pathology, Duke University Medical Center; and Andrew Parent, M.D.’70, retired professor and chairman emeritus, Department of Neurosurgery, University of Mississippi School of Medicine.
• The Service to Medicine and Community Award is presented to alumni who have maintained a high standard of medical service and who have achieved an outstanding record of community service or assumed other significant responsibilities not directly related to medical practice. This year’s honorees are Diana Barnard, M.D.’90, assistant professor, Department of Family Medicine, UVM Larner College of Medicine, and Division of Palliative Medicine, University of Vermont Health Network-Porter Medical Center; and Vito Imbasciani, Ph.D., M.D.’85, secretary of the California Department of Veterans Affairs, urologic surgeon, Department of Urology, Kaiser Permanente Medical Center.
• The Distinguished Graduate Alumni Award is presented to an alumnus/a from the UVM Larner College of Medicine’s Ph.D. or M.S. programs who has demonstrated outstanding achievement in basic, clinical or applied research; education; industry; public service/humanitarianism; and/or outstanding commitment to the Larner College of Medicine community. This year's recipient is Marilyn Cipolla, Ph.D.’97, professor, Department of Neurological Sciences, UVM Larner College of Medicine.
• The Early Achievement Award is presented to alumni who have graduated within the past 15 years in recognition of their outstanding community or College service and/or scientific or academic achievement. This year’s honorees are T. Mike Hsieh, M.D.’05, director of Male Fertility and Men’s Health Center, assistant professor of surgery, Department of Urology, UC San Diego Health System; and Heidi Schumacher, M.D. ’10, assistant superintendent, Health and Wellness, Washington, D.C., Office of the State Superintendent of Education.
• The Robert Larner, M.D.’42 Student Award is presented to a current student(s) for their outstanding leadership and loyalty to the College and one who embodies Dr. Larner’s dedication to not only supporting his medical alma mater, but to inspiring others to do so as well. This year's recipient is Sidney Hilker, Class of 2021 medical student at the UVM Larner College of Medicine.
