Indirect Calorimetry
For measurements of resting metabolic rate or nutritional assessment, we employ a Carefusion Vmax 229 portable metabolic monitor.
By measuring the rate of air flow through a closed canopy system, the Carefusion Vmax 229 measures energy expenditure indirectly through the analysis of expired gases, i.e. the amount of oxygen extracted, and the amount of carbon dioxide added to the air moving through the Vmax system.
Oxygen consumption (VO2), carbon dioxide production (VCO2), respiratory quotient (RQ), and energy expenditure (REE) are generated in the final report, and access to other metabolic parameters are easily obtainable.
