• Tell Us About Your Pet! Do you have a pet you love? Larner is planning a pet spotlight series on social media. Please submit a high-quality photo along with your name/pronouns /area of study/class year, pet's name, age, breed/species, and 1-paragraph description. Example spotlight: Meet Scooby, our first Larner Pet Spotlight of the semester! Scooby is a chatty five-year-old great dane who belongs to M1 student John Glenn. Scooby loves watching birds and squirrels through the window, scrounging for scraps of pizza, and bouncing for attention. John attests that Scooby is incredibly curious and sweet, and his "best friend in the whole world". Submit photos and descriptions to Margie Brenner, Digital Content Specialist.

Class of 2025

• Co2025: Select Ortho Courses Surgery Requirement- Beginning with the class of 2025, the three orthopedics courses listed below may be used toward the surgery subspecialty graduation requirement. As with surgery acting internships, no double-dipping allowed: if you use ORTH-xxxx as your choice AI, it cannot also be used to fulfill the subspecialty requirement. The courses are: Ortho 8506 – AI: Orthopaedic Surgery; Ortho 8507 -Ortho for the PC Physician; and Ortho 8520 -Diabetic Foot Management. For more information, click here.

• Co2027- Share Words of Wisdom with the Incoming Class of 2028- Submissions are due by 5PM EST July 19th, 2024. The LCOM Student Council asks for students of the Class of 2027 to share any advice or Words of Wisdom that they might have for the incoming class of 2028. Feel free to submit more than 1 submission at this link.

• M1 EVENT- Global Health Panel- Friday, May 31st 2024, 12-1PM, MedEdCenter 100 Larner Classroom. Panel for medical students to ask generally about global health from experienced physicians. • Co2028: Off-Campus Living - UVM Office of Student & Community Relations (OSCR): UVM OSCR has a robust website with many resources including but not limited to how to find local housing, community in neighborhoods, and support in off-campus spaces. The Office of Student & Community Relations has a robust website with many PDFs and pages about how to find local housing, community in neighborhoods, and support in off-campus spaces. Their resources page is incredibly extensive, including rent & housing assistance, food insecurity resources, utilities in BTV, community-oriented ways to spend free time, and more! We recommend saving this page for future reference this summer, as it is a wonderfully helpful masterlist of resources.

Upcoming and Ongoing Opportunities

•  Summer Employment Opportunities with the Office of Medical Education- Apply now! Three positions available: Two working with Foundations and Capstone Curriculum Quality Improvement, and one with LCOM Admissions. Full job descriptions can be found here. Positions run for 6-8 weeks, starting in mid-June and ending the first week of August. Please send a letter of interest and CV or resume to Kauther Hassan with either “Admissions or Curriculum Summer Employment Opportunities” in the subject line.

• The Harold S. Geneen Charitable Trust Awards Program for Coronary Heart Disease Research is now accepting pre-proposals through the InfoReady Review portal. This program supports research in the area of the prevention of coronary heart disease or circulatory failure, and improving care for these patients. The program focuses on basic and translational scientific research. Clinical studies are currently ineligible. Applications examining the intersection of coronary heart disease and/or congestive heart failure and COVID-19 or similar viral illnesses are highly encouraged to apply. Pre-proposals are due Friday, June 7th at 11:59 pm. Please submit applications using the UVM InfoReady Review Portal.

• Whole Health for People and Planet Hybrid Summit – submit work by June 15, event taking place Thursday, October 17, 8:30-3:30PM. Organized by the Osher Center for Integrative Health at the University of Vermont, the themes of this event include 1) Nature - Whole Health Connection 2) Food - Whole Health Connection and 3) Mindfulness - Whole Health Connection. Aimed towards health professionals, researchers, educators, policy experts, and students. This is a hybrid event. Full info here.

• UVM Offices Closed for Memorial Day- Monday, May 27 2024. UVM Offices, including the Office of Medical Student Education, are closed in observance of Memorial Day. All University Administrative closures will be observed, with no classes or other activities scheduled for the Foundations Level of the curriculum. • Narrative Medicine SIG/Red Wheelbarrow Workshop- Tuesday, May 28th, 11AM-1PM, MedEd 100. We are hosting a 30 minute podcast discussion and providing students with a space to work on potential submissions to the Red Wheelbarrow. Paints and pizza provided! Sponsored by the Wellness Committee.

• Drop-in Hours with AHEC- Tuesday, May 28, 11:30-1:30pm, Given Rolling table/counter (generally located in front of MedComm office space.) These drop-in hours are provided for students and residents to connect with members of the AHEC team. Drop-in hours are offered regularly to ensure AHEC staff are available on-site to discuss our programs, including the AHEC Scholars Program, AHEC’s incentive scholarships and educational loan repayment programs, Vermont physician job placement services, and more. Schedule a time to visit with a specific member of the AHEC team or drop by any Tuesday between 11:30-1:30 to visit with the AHEC team member on-site. • FMIG Lunch Time Mini-Rounds-Tuesday, May 28, 12:15-1:15PM, MedEdCenter 203. The Family Medicine SIG with our faculty advisor Dr. Amalia Kane will be hosting an informal lunch-time mini rounds. Bring your lunch to MedEd 203 and join the Family Medicine SIG in lunch time mini-rounds! Dr. Amalia Kane will present Diabetes cases and walk students through how a Family Medicine Physician takes a holistic approach to treating Diabetes. This is an informal education session open to all students. We hope to see you there!

• Vascular Surgery's Stroke Case Based Session- Thursday, May 30, 12-1PM, MedEdCenter 100. Join the Vascular Surgery SIG to learn more about stroke etiologies and its surgical management as we go through imaging, clinical cases, and postoperative care. • Psychiatry in the Media: Depictions of Depression on the TV Show black-ish-Tuesday, June 4, 12-1PM, MedEdCenter 201 Small Group Room. We are joined by Dr. Jeremiah Dickerson, who will be helping us analyze and discuss an episode of the TV show "black-ish" and their portrayal of postpartum depression. Contact: Ryan Marawala with questions.

• Empty Bowls- June 5th, 5:30-7:30PM, Hoehl Gallery. Join us for a sweet treat and a good cause! Purchase a ticket to enjoy a delicious bowl of ice cream and take home a handmade ceramic bowl. • Restorative Justice and Healthcare: A Discussion with Dr. Abigail Crocker- Thursday, June 6, 12-1:00PM,  MedEdCenter 201 Small Group Room. The Impact for Incarceration SIG is hosting Dr. Abigail Crocker, the Director of Research for the National Center on Restorative Justice and a UVM professor, to provide a talk on the intersection between restorative justice in the carceral system and healthcare.
