- FYI- UVM Libraries is Moving to a New Catalog and Search System in January- Info here. The “go live” date is Jan. 10, and changes will largely be behind-the scenes. Our intent is to make searching for resources easier and more efficient. The new platform will include an upgrade to our current search system, CATQuest, and new tools and systems for library employees so that they can better support patrons. Use the link to read about what is changing, what is going away, and why. We will be continuously updating information about this switch, so make sure to check back as we get closer to Jan. 10.

Join the AAMC FIRST team as we demo the resident section of our new “Guide to Money Management and Student Loans.” This webinar will highlight all the resources available in our newly designed Guide so that soon-to-be residents and current residents can utilize tools to manage their finances during residency. We’ll review budgeting tools, loan repayment strategies, resources that can help borrowers choose insurance, and determine if buying a home or renting during residency is the best option for them. - Co2024-Commencement Regalia Orders Due Wednesday, February 7th. It's time to order regalia for Commencement! The UVM Larner Alumni Association is pleased to sponsor regalia for the Larner College of Medicine Class of 2024 through generous alumni philanthropy. All graduating students participating in commencement will receive a gown, hood, tam, and tassel at no cost to them. Participating in graduation marks the completion of this phase of your medical education and the beginning of your career as a physician. The Larner Alumni Association Executive Committee, on behalf of all UVM Larner alumni, hopes this gift will enable you to participate in Commencement with your classmates, faculty, and UVM family. Students participating in Commencement are required to wear full regalia. Extra regalia will not be ordered so it is highly recommended to place an order even if you are not sure that you will attend graduation at this time. If you will borrow regalia from a previous graduate, please select tassel only as tassels are customized for each graduating class. Orders must be placed no later than Wednesday, February 7, 2024. Regalia will be distributed prior to Commencement. Additional details about when and where to pick up regalia will be shared in the Spring. - Co2025: 2024 Pisacano Scholars Leadership (up to 10 scholarships with a maximum value of $28,000). Deadline Wednesday, May 1st, 2024. The Pisacano Scholars Leadership program is designed to provide educational programs, leadership training, and funding to reduce the growing burden of educational debt. More information at this link.
Class of 2026
- Co2026: New Step 1 High Yield Review Group: 14 remote drop-in sessions during January and February; see sign up for dates/times. This is a supplemental Processing Step 1 Group led by peer tutor Rich Vuong (co2025.) These optional *remote* drop-in review sessions are high-yield, question-based workshops that cover commonly tested concepts on STEP 1 while focusing on how to effectively answer both U-world and NBME-style questions. The group will: - Practice Breaking down boards-style questions - Discuss differences between similarly presenting diseases - Identify commonly made mistakes on STEP 1 All sessions will be held twice a week in the evenings on Zoom with the exception of a few early afternoon sessions until mid-Feb. - Co2026-Foundations Celebration for the Class of 2026- Wednesday, January 26, 10:30AM. The Class of 2026 has reached a milestone with the completion of the Foundations Level classroom education. As you transition from classroom to the clinic, let’s celebrate your accomplishments and honor those who supported you along the way. Awards will be presented to faculty and staff as selected by the Class of 2025 and to members of the Class for their achievements in Foundations coursework. Some awards include a monetary award. All students are highly encouraged to attend to celebrate the end of your Foundations curriculum and to recognize the achievements of faculty and fellow students. Refreshments will be served!

Class of 2027
- Co2027: PNHP Summer Internship for Medical Students- Summer 2024- Apply ASAP. Physicians for a National Health Program (PNHP) is pleased again to offer several paid, full-time summer internships for medical students who wish to augment their knowledge and leadership skills in the area of health system reform. The internship is 5 weeks long (dates TBD depending upon participants' schedules) and carries a stipend of $1,350. Meeting in a seminar atmosphere, interns will evaluate the successes and failures of US and foreign systems of health care organization under the guidance of PNHP faculty and a distinguished group of medical, corporate, and political leaders. The goal is to enhance interns' confidence in advocating for policies likely to improve their patients' access to affordable health care. - Co2027: 2024 NYU/Bellevue Emergency Medicine Diversity Equity Inclusion Fellowship- application deadline February 9th, 2024. The Ronald O. Perelman Department of Emergency Medicine at NYU Langone Medical Center and Bellevue Hospital Center in conjunction with the NYU School of Medicine is pleased to sponsor the 2024 NYU/Bellevue Emergency Medicine Diversity Equity Inclusion Fellowship. Our department is committed to promoting diversity within the field of Emergency Medicine. The goal of the program is to provide interested medical students with an in-depth exposure to Emergency Medicine early on in medical school education (students who have completed their first year of medical school). - Co2027: Inaugural LCOM EM Summer Fellowship-Deadline for the first round of applications is January 31st and deadline for the second and final round of applications is February 29th. New opportunity for M1s interested in emergency medicine to complete a four-week summer fellowship in emergency medicine at UVMMC- Nic Hutt, M3 and Jesse Nauman, M4, in collaboration with UVMMC EM physicians, nurses, and research staff, have created an opportunity for M1s interested in emergency medicine to complete a four-week summer fellowship in emergency medicine at UVMMC that involves clinical exposure in a level-one trauma center ED, didactic teaching in emergency medicine topics, and involvement in emergency medicine research. - Co2027: Please submit a picture of your anatomy group by late February! Each year, the med student and PT classes organize a Convocation of Thanks (COT) in the spring to commemorate the gracious donations that allow us to learn anatomy. This event is attended by LCOM, other programs which use the anatomy lab, and friends and family of the donors themselves. This year’s Convocation of Thanks is on May 5th in the Davis Center. This is a student-run event and faculty coordinators will reach out to you in the new year with details about getting involved. In the meantime- please submit a picture of your anatomy table/group (not in the anatomy lab, of course!), and any reflections you or your group had about the experience (what would you want to tell your donor if you could?), to faculty coordinator Lynn Bateman. Please include your table number and COT in the subject heading. We hope to have all of these collected by late February, so if you’d like to get your group together after the break, that’s ok too.

- St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Pediatric Oncology Education (POE) Program- deadline to apply Thursday, February 1st, 2024. The program offers a unique opportunity for pre-doctoral students preparing for careers in the biomedical sciences, medicine, and pharmacy to gain biomedical and oncology research experience. Students participate in basic or clinical oncology research, a core lecture series designed specifically for them, as well as research and clinical conferences. All participants make a PowerPoint presentation on their research project and submit a report on their research project written in the style of a journal in which their faculty mentor publishes. A primary goal of the POE program is to encourage students to pursue a career in cancer research. Thus, we are particularly interested in highly qualified students with a serious career interest in cancer research, either as a clinical scientist or laboratory-based research scientist. Our St. Jude Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences offers training in leading-edge scientific fields paired with unique mentoring in the St. Jude clinical experience. All POE program applicants must already have research experience and be full time students at the time they apply. Applicants must be United States citizens, non-citizen nationals, or possess a visa permitting permanent residence in the United States (required by the funding agency). All must be in at least their college sophomore year of college at the time they apply. POE medical students spend a minimum of 10 weeks in the program. The minimum tenure requirement for all others is 11 weeks. All POE applicants must have an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.40 (on a 4.0 scale) in math and science (biology, chemistry, and physics) and at least a 3.40 overall. Program participants will receive a $600/week subsistence allowance. Fully furnished group housing will be provided at no cost for non-local participants. - Research Award opportunity- Air Force Science & Technology Fellowship Program (AF STFP)-first deadline Thursday, February 1st. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine administers postdoctoral and senior research awards at the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), the U.S. Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), and the U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA) under the Air Force Science & Technology Fellowship Program (AF STFP).
The program is seeking highly qualified candidates who are U.S. citizens and hold, or anticipate earning, a doctorate in a variety of fields of science or engineering.
Application deadline dates (four annual review cycles): February 1; May 1; August 1. November 1
Awardees have the opportunity to: Conduct independent research in an area compatible with the interests of the Air Force laboratories; Devote full-time effort to research and publication; Access the excellent and often unique Air Force research facilities; and Collaborate with leading scientists and engineers.
Awardee benefits include a Base stipend starting at $76,542; (may be higher based on experience); and Health insurance (including dental and vision), relocation benefits, and a professional travel allowance.

- NY Ultrasound Olympics- Zonoslam 2024- February 10th, 2024, 10-2:30PM; Zucker School of Medicine, Hempstead, NY. Register by December 15th. In this event, teams of 3-4 medical students will compete through a series of ultrasound challenges that test both conceptual and hands on skills. The cost is $20 per participant; lunch will be provided and prizes will be given to winning teams. Closing remarks will be provided by Dr. David Teng, a Northwell Health Pediatric Emergency Medicine physician who has dedicated his career to the forefront of Point-Of-Care Ultrasound and providing innovative ultrasound education to medical students, residents, and fellows.
