Class of 2024

  • Co2024: Booking Rooms for Virtual Residency Interviews- FYI: Do you need to reserve a small group room for virtual residency interviews? Applicants who don’t have a private space to conduct virtual residency interviews at home may be looking to book a space on campus. Students at the CT campus may contact Joanna Conklin at Danbury or Moira Barber at Norwalk to request a private space for interviews. Students at the VT campus may book Med Ed rooms themselves as described in the Medical Student Guide to Booking Larner Spaces. To reserve a room in HSRF or the Given Courtyard, please email Medical Student Services and include the following information: Event Title: Date & Inclusive Times of the Event: Details about the event: Estimated Number of Attendees: Sponsoring Organization: Event Primary Contact: [Name, Email Address].   • Co2025: Now Open: Advanced Integration Course Browsing Period- starting Monday, October 16th, 2023Get ready to start planning your Advanced Integration year! You may begin browsing the 2024-2025 Advanced Integration Level Course Catalog in OASIS beginning October 16. Please test your OASIS log-in, and review the Student User’s Guide to Fourth Year Scheduling, as well as the related collection of Frequently Asked Questions. If applicable to your circumstances, please be familiar with Medical Student Handbook Policy 523.00 Site Assignments: Advanced Integration Level. For questions contact Melissa Long, LCOM Registrar.
  • Co2025 - Surgery Senior Major Info Session- Wednesday, November 8th, 5PM; MedEd Room 200. Learn about the requirements and the benefits of pursuing the Surgery Senior Major with a pizza dinner.   • Co2025: CVRI-VT ECAC "Find Your Mentor" Event - Thursday, November 30th, 12:00-1:00 PM, Med Ed 100. The CVRI-VT ECAC are thrilled to invite you to our esteemed "Find Your Mentor" event --a special research networking occasion orchestrated to connect early career student researchers, including medical students and graduate students, with potential research mentors.   • Co2025: Group Advising Sessions with Dr. Katie Dolbec- Thursday, November 30th, 5:15 PM; Thursday, December 7th, 5:00 PM; and Thursday, December 14th at 5:00PM. Get some guidance on your approach to Advanced Integration scheduling- Dr. Katie Dolbec, Assistant Dean for Students, will be holding three group advising sessions via Zoom this fall. The purpose of these sessions will be to discuss approaches to the Advanced Integration lotteries and scheduling your 4th year. Session 1 on Thursday, 11/20 at 5:15 pm is for current third year students who are deciding between 3 or more specialties. Session 2 on Thursday, 12/7 at 5:00pm is for students who are deciding between 2 specialties. Session 3 on Thursday, 12/14 at 5:00 pm is for students who have chosen their specialty. Class of 2027

  • Co2027: November SEC Meeting: Tuesday, November 7th, 5:30-7:30pm. The November SEC Meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 7 from 5:30-7:30pm. The Larner College of Medicine Student Education Committee meets the first Tuesday of each month (from August-June).

The Student Education Committee will be holding elections for the class of 2027 student reps, and this is the final meeting before Co2027 elections are held- students running to be representatives must attend one meeting before general elections. Meetings are always open to all students, and we invite members of the class of 2027 to join us in-person (MedEd 203) or on Zoom to learn more about the SEC and what we do. If eligible and you’d like to run for a spot as a Class of 2027 representative, please email a paragraph of interest to be used in the election by Friday, November 10th, 11:59 pm to Sarah Krumholz. Please include your assigned campus designation (VT or CT) in your email.

Join a virtual detailed overview of information on applying for Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center Summer Research Fellowship for first-and-second year medical students studying at U.S. Medical Schools- No RSVP necessary. Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, one of the nation’s leading cancer hospitals, hosts a summer research fellowship for first-and-second year students studying at U.S. Medical Schools. The program targets students who have an interest in careers as physician scientists in the field of oncology or related biomedical sciences. The program provides hands-on exposure to cancer research in a laboratory or a field setting in order to stimulate the interest and advance the knowledge base of participants to consider further education for careers as cancer physicians and researchers. Program participants will work with mentors and in labs centrally involved in both basic and clinical research; attend MSK’s abundant didactic opportunities; learn how to blend lessons from science and clinical practice; and present their work to a range of audiences. In addition, students spend the summer in New York City, providing them an opportunity to experience and explore everything NYC has to offer! The fellowship website with more information is here.   • Co2027: Annual Larner Summer Opportunities Panel- Friday, November 17th, 12-1:00PM, MedEd200 and Zoom. OME is proud to present our Annual optional UVM Larner Med Summer Opportunities Panel. Join us to pick the brains of Members of the second-year class on various ways you might spend the summer between your first and second years.   • Applications Being Accepted for $1500 William Bean Student Research Award- - Application deadline 03/01/2024. The American Osler Society is seeing student projects that expand our knowledge of medical history and the use of literature and the arts to improve medical practice for the annual William Bean Student Research Award of $1500. More information here.
  • Donation Drive For Migrant Families- The Student National Medical Association is collaborating with the Janet S. Munt Family Room to collect donations for Migrant Families in Vermont. Items being requested: Size 4 or 5 girls clothes, Men’s and Women’s clothes;  Men’s and Women’s Shoes – including boots; Children’s, boys and girls, clothing; Clothes for pregnant mom / pants; Paper / books etc for 5th, 3rd and 1st grader; Baby toys; Baby clothes; Boys size 6-12m; Bras; Sweaters; Socks; and other winter clothing. 
  • SNMA RMEC Food and Wellness Drive- November 10-11; Drop off locations: Office of DEI (Given D-201) and UVM LCOM Student Lounge. The LCOM Student National Medical Association is hosting a regional medical education conference on November 10-11th at UVM LCOM and are collecting donations for the Boys and Girls Club of Burlington.   • Housing Opportunity for Medical Students- February and March 2024. For the past ten years I have made my lovely, cozy, and quiet South End house available to one or two UVM medical students, during the months of February and March. I do not charge rent.   • AWARD OPPORTUNITY - AOA Medical Student Service Leadership Project Award- 01/24 application deadline. This grant is designed to support leadership development for medical students. Winning team’s medical school/institution to receive $5,000 the 1st yr, $3,000 the 2nd yr, and $1,000 the 3rd yr.

  • AOA Robert J. Glaser Distinguished Teacher Award- 04/05/24 nomination deadline. The nomination must be made by the dean of the medical school. Each awardee will receive a $10,000 prize. Designed to provide national recognition to faculty members who have distinguished themselves in medical student education…Link here.
  • Student Emergency Fund - Meezan-Brittenback Student Emergency Fund, ongoing. Student Emergency Fund founders William “Bill” Meezan ’67 (1947-2016) and his husband Mike Brittenback, have been long-time supporters of the Prism Center and LGBTQ+ students of UVM. They established the Meezan-Brittenback Student Emergency Fund to support queer and trans students during times of financial hardship. Students in need should apply through the UVM Emergency Grant Program’s online application. Awards from this fund are typically $50-$500 with preference given to queer and trans applicants. Link is here.
  • Join GSA's New Book Club- UVM’s Gender and Sexuality Alliance is hosting a queer lit book club for LGBTQ+ community members! Please follow this link for more info and to sign up. The first meeting is currently TBD, but interested medical students can contact Angela Russo with questions.
  • Food available at Rally Cat’s Cupboard-Open Mondays 1pm-3pm and Thursdays 2pm-4pm in Davis Center 103, near the Main Street tunnel, next to The Hub. Rally Cat’s Cupboard seeks to assist members of the UVM community by striving to alleviate some effects of food insecurity. Rally Cat’s Cupboard is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that is run through UVM’s Food Systems Graduate Program, and all food is free for maximum access for our community. To ensure an equitable distribution experience for both volunteers and community members, Rally Cat’s has a 21 person limit for the space, and a 2 bags per person limit. During open hours, the Cupboard is restocked, so do not worry! It is not first-come, first-serve. Any questions can be sent via email. For updates, follow them on Instagram @rallycatscupboard!

  • Fall 2023 Careers in Medicine Specialty Panel Series- Rad/Onc- Tuesday, November 7th, 12:00-12:50 PM; MedEd Center 200 Classroom. The goal of this informal session will be to answer any and all questions about Rad/Onc as a specialty choice. Attendings will be on hand to discuss the field in general and to describe the subspecialty opportunities available. Special attention will also be taken to explain the residency application process and offer specific guidance to best prepare you for navigating that process.   • Monthly Student Education Committee (SEC) Meeting- Tuesday, November 7th, 5:30-7:30 PM over Zoom (link is here.) The Student Education Committee is comprised of students dedicated to and actively involved in the improvement of the medical school curriculum. Representatives from each class meet once a month with the Interim Senior Associate Dean of Medical Education, Dr. Christa Zehle, to discuss a variety of issues pertaining to the student experience within the Vermont Integrated Curriculum (VIC). The group’s responsibility is to act as a liaison with faculty to provide a unified student point of view, and to appropriately bring pertinent educational issues to the attention of faculty and course directors. SEC is charged with reviewing course evaluations written by students at the close of each Foundations course and presenting that data to the Foundations Committee, which oversees the pre-clinical portion of the curriculum. Please view our website for more information or email SEC representative Delaney Sztraicher.
  • Spotlight on Primary Care Series: Don't Get Lost in Translation: Exploring Culture and How We Understand Health and Illness- Session Description: Wednesday, November 8, 2023 12:00 PM-1:00 PM, MedEdCenter 200 Sullivan Classroom. Join AHEC and Linda Lai Nga Li, LICSW, for a discussion on working with patients who may not have a ‘Western Medicine’ understanding of health.  Participants will be oriented to approaches practitioners can use to explore the patient’s culturally determined beliefs around health and illness. Brown bag Event- bring your lunch and we’ll bring the snacks—first come, first served while supplies last! Contact Jennifer Gaudreau, Physician Placement Professional, for more information.
  • Fall 2023 Careers in Medicine Specialty Panel Series- Lifestyle Medicine- Thursday, November 9th, 12:00-12:50 PM; MedEd Center 100 Classroom. The goal of this informal session will be to answer any and all questions about the practice of Lifestyle Medicine.   • National Institutes of Health (NIH) Medical Research Scholars Program (MRSP) accepting applications- virtual informational webinar Thursday, November 9th at 1 pm ET (link here.) The NIH MRSP is a unique, year-long residential research training program which seeks to attract talented, research-oriented medical, dental, and veterinary students to the NIH intramural campus in Bethesda, MD, and its satellite campuses. MRSP is targeted to 2nd, 3rd or 4th year students. MRSP is not simply a research program but rather a career development program for students heading toward careers in biomedical research. During the year, students select and engage in a basic, clinical, or translational research project with an experienced research mentor that matches their professional interests, research focus, and career goals. MRSP also provides students with a dedicated curriculum of academic activities featuring lectures by world-renowned scientists, clinical teaching rounds featuring patients from the NIH Clinical Center, a Journal Club addressing major issues in clinical research, as well as workshops in professional development such as work-life balance, CV writing, and interviewing skills. Our NIH MRSP team from the Office of Clinical Research Training and Medical Education (OCRTME) will be conducting a virtual informational webinar on Thursday, November 9th at 1PM EST.   • Random Chats about Data workshops- Using syntax for data analysis, Friday, November 10th 8:30-9:30AM, Howe Library Meeting Room; and Data Visualization, November 14th, 11:30AM -12:30PM, Dana Library Classroom 108.  These workshops are intended to be conversations about YOUR questions about data analysis. In each workshop we will focus on a different aspect of data analysis. The workshops will help you become familiar with best practices for quantitative research and offer the opportunity to discuss practical considerations as well as methodology. Register online and please remember to cancel if you can’t make it, so that the spot opens for someone else.   • Intro to Therapy- Friday, November 10th, 12PM-1PM, MedEd 200. Psychiatry SIG is holding an event with Dr. Judith Lewis, who will be presenting about different approaches to therapy and their how they might be used clinically!
  • Campus Rec Mini Triathlon- Saturday, November 11th, 11AM-3PM, PFG Athletic/Rec Complex. Donate unopened, non-expired food items in exchange for your Mini Triathlon entrance fee! UVM Campus Recreation is partnering with Rally Cat’s Cupboard to host the first-ever Campus Rec Indoor Mini Triathlon and Food Drive. Each participant (or team) will receive a UVM Campus Recreation swim cap to use during the event. You may choose to compete in the recreational division or competitive division. The heats will be sorted by division. Entrance fee into the event is a donation to Rally Cat’s Cupboard, which can be any unopened, non-expired food items. Course: The triathlon will begin in the Forbush Natatorium with a 10-minute swim, then move to the cycling studio for a 20-minute indoor cycle, and end in the lower track for a 15-minute run/walk/roll.   • EdTech Student Advisory Group-Wednesday, Nov 15th 2023, 12-1:00PM, Room TBD- Info in VIC Calendar. The Educational Technology (EdTech) Team is holding monthly meetings on the third Wednesday of every month at noon to hear student feedback on the technology used in the curriculum at LCOM and to evaluate new tools and software as part of the EdTech Student Advisory Group. We want your input and need your perspectives on the technology you use and some we are evaluating for possible inclusion. For instance, we are currently exploring augmented and virtual reality anatomy software and AR / VR headsets.   • Sixth Annual StorySlamRx Storytelling Workshop with Susanne Schmidt- Wednesday, November 15th, 5:30-7:00PM via Zoom. LCOM GHHS and AOA are proud to present the“StorySlamR- Voices of Medicine” Storytelling Workshop with Susanne Schmidt via Zoom ( registration required). Narrative medicine is just one more powerful tool in our wellness kits. The UVM Larner College of Medicine will be hosting a Moth-style StorySlam for all members of the UVM Medical Center community on January 18, 2024, 5:30– 7:30pm (RSVP for the January event here) and help spread the word.) The theme for this year's StorySlamRx – Voices in Medicine is “The Small Moments That Shape Us.”

In preparation for this event, we are hosting a storytelling workshop with former Moth StorySlam winner and producer, Susanne Schmidt, on Wednesday, November 15thregistration is required. In this workshop, you will learn how to take your story from the page to the stage. We invite everyone in our healthcare communities (Nuvance, UVMMC, UVM, LCOM, CNHS) to join this workshop regardless of your intention to throw your name in as a storyteller at our annual January event.

NOTE: You do not need to attend the story telling workshop to tell a story at the January event; however, many have found it very helpful in preparing them to share their stories. Sue Schmidt is AMAZING!

OME Staffing Update

  • Please welcome Elise Longnecker to the OME.  Elise will be working in the Admissions Office as a Medical Student Admissions Enrollment Professional.  Elise comes to us with 13 years of previous experience most recently working at the University of Utah School of Medicine as an Admissions Programs and Event Coordinator.  With the addition of Elise, the Admissions Department is now fully staffed.

Lost & Found

Lost something? Email the Office of Medical Student Education (OMSE) a description of the item. OMSE and the Dana Medical Library recently joined the UVM campus-wide lost & found system and search not only the College of Medicine, but campus as a whole to see if it's been turned in. If it hasn't, the office can file a claim for the item should someone turn it in soon!

Found something? Please turn it into either the Office of Medical Student Education (Given Courtyard n100) or the Dana Medical Library (First floor of the Medical Education Center) and we will be sure to log it into the Campus-Wide Lost & Found Database.

Found items are kept up to 30 days, and then are donated to various local organizations depending on the item.
