Information for Prospective Students

Admission Requirements

Applicants for graduate programs in Clinical and Translational Science must hold the following:

  • U.S. Baccalaureate degree or an equivalent international degree.
  • Four semesters of college-level science highly recommended.
  • Two semesters of college-level mathematics or statistics highly recommended.
  • Two semesters of college level English composition or equivalent.
 

Qualified candidates will have excellent GPA's and recommendations. While there is no minimum number requirement, successful candidates in other graduate programs at the University of Vermont generally have a minumum GPA of 3.5.

Interviews with appointed faculty are required for all candidates to the MS and PhD programs.

Students applying to the PhD in CTS must have a source of funding and a Key CTS research mentor * willing to provide a letter of support as part of the application.

*Co-mentoring with Faculty from other programs is allowed and often desirable but must involve CTS Faculty in all aspects of student research. This requirement is also applicable to CTS students in MS program wishing to transfer to PhD.

We anticipate that some prospective students will not have completed all requirements. All students seeking admission to our programs should contact CTS Education prior to finalizing their application.

Upon acceptance into the program and after an appropriate course of study has been agreed upon, enrolled students must maintain a 3.0 grade point average in didactic coursework, have acceptable evaluations in their research work and meet all program requirements.

STANDARDIZED EXAM REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION

Applicants holding a degree from an unaccredited institution and  International applicants must submit standardized exam scores to be considered for admission to the Master’s and PhD programs. It is recommended that all other applicants to Clinical and Translational Science degree programs submit standardized exam scores although it is not required. The average mean score of the Verbal, Quantitative and Analytic GRE exams will usually rank in the 60th percentile or above for qualified candidates.

International Applicant
An international applicant applying for a master’s or PhD program is required by UVM Graduate College policy to submit official verbal and quantitative scores from the GRE or Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) for admission.  Certificate of Graduate Study applicants are excluded.

University of Vermont Funding Requirement
Applicants applying for admission who also intend to seek funding through the University of Vermont are required to submit an official copy of the GRE, Medical College Admission Test (MCAT), or Law School Admission Test (LSAT) scores at the time the application is submitted.  The exam submitted must have been taken within the last five years. 

Applicants admitted into a UVM program without standardized exam scores will not be eligible for UVM funding and may not submit scores after being admitted.

Financial aid in the form of loans does not require a standardized exam score

Transfer of Credits:

Students may transfer CTS courses or other relevant graduate level courses with grades of B or better from an accredited institution to an MS or PhD program. Please refer to the Graduate College Transfer of Credit Policy for details.  A maximum of  3 credits of CTS courses from UVM with a grade of B or higher are permitted to to transfer into the Certificate program. 

Application Deadlines

  • October 1 for a spring semester admission
  • March 1 for a fall semester admission
  • Physicians who are currently completing a surgical residency may additionally apply for the Certificate in CTS on August 15 for a fall semester admission.  The August 15 deadline applies to the Certificate only. Physicians interested in the Master of Science or PhD in CTS must adhere to the October 1 or March 1 deadline.
