The Teaching Academy Induction and Award Ceremony in January closed with the presentation of the Teaching Academy’s Distinguished Service Award to Alan Rubin, M.D., professor of family medicine and psychiatry, who is retiring from UVM after serving for 46 years as a faculty member and has played an integral role in the education of medical students through Doctoring in Vermont and other courses. Faculty, staff, students, alumni, friends, and family gathered virtually March 12 to celebrate how his 46-year-long career at the University of Vermont has touched thousands of lives. Thank you for your service, Dr. Rubin!
AAMC Medical Education Research Certificate (MERC) Workshops
The Teaching Academy is hosting two AAMC Medical Education Research Certificate (MERC) Workshops on Friday, May 7 and Friday, May 14, 2021.
The Medical Education Research Certificate (MERC) program is intended to provide the knowledge necessary to understand the purposes and processes of medical education research, to become informed consumers of the medical education research literature,
and to be effective collaborators in medical education research.
The program is open to all who are interested in improving their educational research skills and is targeted for those with a background in medical education but relatively less experience in conducting educational research. There is no charge to
participate, however you must pre-register.
Introduction to Qualitative Data Collection Methods

This workshop is intended for physicians and generalists in medical education, as well as faculty and staff involved in student affairs, who wish to develop perspectives and skills for collecting qualitative data, such as data from focus group discussions,
interviews, observation field notes, and responses to open-ended questions—used in admissions processes, program development, curriculum evaluation, needs assessments, performance evaluation, and various scholarship and research applications.
After participating in this workshop, learners will be able to:
- Demonstrate applied knowledge of the appropriate selection, use, and standards for rigor of some common methods for collection of qualitative data;
- Generate research questions appropriate for qualitative studies and choose appropriate data collection methods;
- Demonstrate applied knowledge of approaches to achieve rigor in the design of qualitative studies and collection of qualitative data;
- Demonstrate essential skills required for conducting focus groups.

Following completion of this workshop, attendees will be able to discuss:
- How to translate a research question into a hypothesis, and how to develop the null hypothesis;
- The steps in hypothesis testing;
- Type 1 and Type 2 errors;
- Power, sample size, confidence interval, and statistical significance.

Faculty Development Series for Clinical Teachers 101
This 3-part faculty development series will cover all the major topics for Medical Education during the Clerkship. This program is available to all teachers, residents, fellows, faculty, and staff (i.e., clerkship coordinators). Each part (101, 201, and
301) consists of 6, one-hour sessions with the curriculum to repeat every 3 years. The curriculum is available at all teaching sites.
A Certificate of Completion will be awarded after completing at least 4/6 of the yearly sessions and a total of 12/18 (70%) of the sessions. Recordings are available on the Teaching Academy website.

Integrative Pain Management Conference

Stanford’s Teaching LGBTQ+ Health course
Stanford’s Teaching LGBTQ+ Health course: Learners across the health professions demand improved LGBTQ+ health content and additional training opportunities in their schools’ curricula. However, most clinician educators received little, if any, training in LGBTQ+ health when they were students. This free, online, CME course addresses the gap between expected faculty teaching competency and a lack of previous faculty training. The course is open access to educators across the health professions, as well as other providers, staff, trainees, and patients. It includes both LGBTQ+ health content and recommendations for teaching this material to trainees in any discipline or clinical department.
