Teaching Academy Retreat Events Focus on New Members, Awards, & Assessment

​The Teaching Academy at the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont held its annual Snow Season Education Retreat on January 15-16, 2020 in the College’s Medical Education Center and UVM Davis Center. Highlights included an Induction Ceremony for 2019 new members and advanced members, the presentation of the annual Teaching and Education Awards, and the first annual Snow Season Debate, moderated by Professor and Chair of Pediatrics Lewis First, M.D.

The Teaching Academy at the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont held its annual Snow Season Education Retreat on January 15-16, 2020 in the College’s Medical Education Center and UVM Davis Center. Highlights included an Induction Ceremony for 2019 new members and advanced members, the presentation of the annual Teaching and Education Awards, and the first annual Snow Season Debate, moderated by Professor and Chair of Pediatrics Lewis First, M.D.

The induction and awards event was led by Teaching Academy Director Kathryn Huggett, Ph.D., who announced that since its establishment in 2014, the Teaching Academy has grown to include 163 members, including 18 at the Distinguished Educator level, 42 at the Master Teacher level, 86 at the Member level, and 17 at the Protégé level. Presenters at the event included Karen Lounsbury, Ph.D., professor of pharmacology and Foundations director, Dean Richard L. Page, M.D., and UVM Health Network Medical Group President Claude Deschamps, M.D.

Jan Carney, M.D., M.P.H., associate dean for public health and health policy, received the Frederick C. Morin Educational Leadership Award, which recognizes an individual who has demonstrated an exemplary and sustained record of service in educational leadership, committee service, and/or administration. Elise Everett, M.D., M.S., associate professor and clerkship director for obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences, received both the Innovation in Curriculum Development or Pedagogy Award and the Educational Scholarship Award. William Raszka, M.D., professor of pediatrics and Attacks and Defenses course director, was recognized with the Learner Assessment Award. Garth Garrison, M.D., associate professor of medicine, received the Outstanding Contribution Award.

UVM Health Network Medical Group education award recipients were also recognized at the event. Dr. Deschamps presented the Education Grant to Adam Ulano, M.D., assistant professor of radiology as principal investigator (PI), and co-PIs Ryan Walsh, M.D., and Michael Bazylewicz, M.D., assistant professors of radiology; the Graduate Medical Education Educator of the Year to Joseph Winget, M.D., associate professor of medicine; and the Continuing Medical Education Educator of the Year to Cheung Wong, M.D., Berta Pi-Sunyer Williams Professor and director of gynecologic oncology in obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences.

Following the debate on making the USMLE pass/fail, Snow Season Retreat attendees participated in sessions on the following topics: development of evaluation tools; assessment and program evaluation for interprofessional education; narrative assessment; teaching quality improvement; assessing learners at any level; writing inclusive cases; faculty resilience; teaching for health equity; and planning for continuous quality improvement.

Anne Dougherty, M.D., Associate Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences has now accepted the enhanced role of ODEI Director for Gender Equity.

In this new role Dr. Dougherty will continue her current coordination of workshops, speakers and awards related to the LCOM Gender Equity Initiative.  She will also develop new mentoring and resource programs for women and underrepresented minorities in medicine, participate in analysis and tracking, and collaborate on efforts to enhance diversity, equity and inclusion in faculty recruitment. As ODEI Director for Gender Equity, Dr. Dougherty will report directly to Margaret A. Tandoh, M.D., FACS, Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.   Congratulations to Anne on her new role!

Marjorie Meyer, MD, Division Director of Maternal Fetal Medicine, was recognized for her work in the treatment of women with opioid dependence during pregnancy in Governor Phil Scott's State of the State address on Jan 9.  Read announcement here

Theresa Ko, PhD (Croucher Fellowship 2006), Assistant Professor in the Division of Reproductive Sciences, was recently interviewed with the Croucher Foundation in December 2019 about her molecular biology quest to reduce maternal deaths.   Read the article here

Nathalie Feldman, M.D., Educator Assistant Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences, was recently awarded (along with her colleague, Judy Lewis, MD in the Dept. of Psychiatry) the UVM Larner College of Medicine Teaching Academy's "Educational Scholarship Award" for her work on the learning environment.  

Jenna Flanagan, MD (PGY-3) will be presenting a poster "A Needs Assessment for Somali Women:  Optimizing this Populations' Peripartum Care in a Tertiary Care Center in Vermont" at the North American Refugee Health Conference, June 16-18, 2017 in Toronto, Canada.

Erin Morris, MD, received the 2017 APGO Excellence in Teaching Award.  Dr. Morris is an active clinical member of the Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine.  She currently serves as our Associate Ob/Gyn Clerkship Director and the Faculty mentor for the Ob/Gyn Student Interest Group. 

May 15, 2017 - Elise Everett, MD was presented the Clinical Teacher of the Year Award from the Class of 2017 during Honors Night.
