Botten and Celdara to Develop Treatment for Viruses like SARS-CoV-2

Amid the biomedical science world’s race to develop and distribute vaccines and treatments for COVID-19, a team made up of a Larner College of Medicine scientist and partners at Lebanon, N.H.-based Celdara Medical are busy building a potentially game-changing therapy to fight RNA viruses like SARS-CoV-2. The team, which includes Jason Botten, Ph.D., professor in the Division of Immunobiology, recently received a two-year Small Business Technology Transfer Research (STTR) grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This funding supports the development of a novel, broad-spectrum therapeutic/prophylactic against RNA viruses, which, in addition to the virus responsible for COVID-19, include SARS, Ebola, influenza, and pathogenic arenaviruses. Carney Receives UVM Citizenship and Service Award

Jan CarneyJan Carney, M.D., M.P.H., professor in the Division of Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine, associate dean for public health and health policy, and senior advisor to the dean of the Larner College of Medicine, has been named the 2019–2020 recipient of the President’s Distinguished University Citizenship and Service Award in recognition of her innovative teaching, creative leadership and service to the University of Vermont community. Carney, who served as Vermont Commissioner of Health from 1989 to 2003, has been a passionate advocate for preventive medicine and public health throughout her career — at UVM, in Vermont and nationally. Over the past 15 years, her public health projects course — run in collaboration with the United Way of Northwest Vermont — has resulted in the completion of well over 200 public health projects that address critical health issues in the local community. John (Jack) Leahy, M.D., Appointed Professor Emeritus

Jack LeahyJohn L. Leahy, M.D., recruited in 1996 as chief of the Department of Medicine’s Division of Endocrinology and Diabetes, has retired and been appointed a professor emeritus. He served as chief of the division until 2010 and then as co-chief until 2016. Leahy is internationally recognized for his research in all aspects of pancreatic beta cell function, including the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes, beta cell biology, beta cell mass and insulin secretion. In 2015, he was named the inaugural Sarah Nichols Gruenig Green & Gold Professor of Diabetes Research at the Larner College of Medicine. He has authored and co-authored many book chapters and articles, the latter of which have appeared in such peer-reviewed journals as Diabetes, The Journal of Clinical Investigation, and The New England Journal of Medicine. During his long career, he has been an extraordinary teacher of medical students, post-doctoral students, fellows and junior faculty, and has delivered superb diabetes care to thousands of patients.

Medical education leaders and scholars gathered virtually on January 13 and 14, 2021 for the Larner College of Medicine Teaching Academy’s 2021 Induction and Award Ceremony and Snow Season Education Retreat. Co-presented with the University of Vermont Health Network Medical Group, the ceremony recognized medical educators and kicked off the annual education program, which this year featured several sessions on diversity, equity, and inclusion. Faculty and Staff News


Mary Cushman

In October of 2020, Mary Cushman, M.D., M.Sc., professor in the Division of Hematology/Oncology, received the Award of Meritorious Achievement from the American Heart Association for work promoting gender equity in science and medicine. Cushman, who has worked on dozens of AHA committees, co-authored countless papers and won a case full of awards, has made far-reaching contributions on the local, regional and national levels. They include service as chair of council operations and as a national board director. She's also been a pioneer for the AHA in early-career development programs, setting up AHA programs that guide, counsel and inspire the next generation of scientific leaders. Thanks to her efforts, early-career development programs have multiplied in the AHA.

Ralph Budd, M.D., professor in the Division of Immunobiology, is serving on National Institutes of Health study sections for autoimmunity (ACTS) and infectious diseases (IGD).

Lee-Anna K. Burgess, M.D., assistant professor in the Division of Hospital Medicine, has been appointed director of the Nutrition, Metabolism, Gastrointestinal System (NMGI) course in the Foundations Level of the Vermont Integrated Curriculum. She is the recipient of the 2017 Frank L. Babbott Memorial Resident of the Year Award and the 2020 Mark A. Levine Clinical Teacher of the Year Award. Her primary clinical interests are hospital medicine, high value care, and communication.

The Quality Program is collaborating with the Division of Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine to deliver a quality improvement-focused curriculum to pulmonary and critical care medicine fellows. Stephen DeVoe, M.P.H., M.S., quality program project director, and Allen Repp, M.D.,M.Sc., professor in the Division of Hospital Medicine, have been delivering the curriculum, which began in September 2020.

Hale Garners Foundations Award

Andrew Hale

Andrew Hale, M.D., assistant professor in the Division of Infectious Disease, received the Foundations Course Director Award from the Larner College of Medicine Class of 2023. Hale is director for the Cardiovascular, Renal and Respiratory Systems course. The annual celebration marks the end of the first level of the Vermont Integrated Curriculum and gives students the opportunity to express their gratitude faculty and staff. Student and Resident News

The Endocrine Society has awarded an Outstanding Abstract Award to Samantha Steinmetz-Wood, M.D., a current internal medicine resident and the incoming endocrinology fellow, for her abstract titled “Navigating the Debate on Large (4+cm) Thyroid Nodules: Local Insight on a Persisting Problem.” This award provides the opportunity to post a recorded presentation of the abstract on the ENDO 2021 conference platform.

Several students of Mary Cushman, M.D., M.Sc., professor in the Division of Hematology/Oncology, have recently won awards:

  • Charles Nicoli, M.D.’20, won the Diane Becker Award for Achievement in Clinical Epidemiology and Prevention from Johns Hopkins University Department of Medicine. He was nominated by Cushman and Tim Plante, M.D., M.H.S., assistant professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine. This high-profile national award for residents was for his work with Cushman and Plante titled “Proneurotensin, Hypertension and Diabetes.” He gave a presentation at JHU Dept of Medicine Grand Rounds, held virtually.
  • Christina Evans, M.D.’18, was awarded the Larner College of Medicine Dean’s Excellence Award for Outstanding Research Publication in November of 2020.

 

Research and Grants

Ralph Budd, M.D., professor in the Division of Immunobiology, has had several research advances in his lab:

  • Research on murine lupus has found that DNA demethylation occurs at select sites throughout the genome, and these sites correspond to the location of many unregulated genes, included several that cause inflammation.
  • Research on synovial gamma/delta T cells has shown that expression of the ligand in some cells depends on opening of a cell ore by gasdermin D, which is normally expressed on stressed or dying cells. “This adds to our developing view that these T cells function in the immune surveillance of cell stress,” he says.
  • The renewal application for a T32 training grant received an outstanding score of 16. His team is waiting on the funding decision.

Mary Cushman, M.D., M.Sc., professor in the Division of Hematology/Oncology and vice chair for emerging researchers, reports that the NIH-funded Accelerating COVID-19 Therapeutic Interventions and Vaccines (ACTIV) 4a Trial was partly closed to accrual in December 2020 for the stratum of ICU-level of care patients with COVID-19. The team found that full intensity anticoagulation with heparin/low molecular weight heparin was a futile intervention as compared to prophylaxis dose heparin/low molecular weight heparin. She is also a multiple principal investigator for new COVID-19 research funded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. This new project is collaborating across 14 existing cohorts of over 50,000 participants to identify cases of COVID-19 and answer critical questions about risk factors and consequences of the disease. The Laboratory for Clinical Biochemistry Research at UVM is collecting dried blood spots on up to 40,000 participants to perform serology testing.

Jennifer Kelly, D.O., associate professor in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, and David Lunardini, M.D., assistant professor in the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation, received IRB approval in December of 2020 for a new research project titled “Effect of PTH analog on union rates of Type II odontoid fractures in older adults.”

Constance van Eeghen, DrPH, MHSA, M.B.A., assistant professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine Research, is principal investigator for a $100,000 grant from the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI). The grant is a patient-centered outcomes and comparative effectiveness research capacity building infrastructure award to build a community of patients with multiple chronic conditions for participation in research by revising and implementing a Partnering Guide.

Clinical News

Weekly Huddles Keep Division of Infectious Disease Informed
The Division of Infectious Disease continues to participate in a weekly huddle related to the COVID-19 pandemic and other topics. This once-daily brief huddle to keep the whole team up to date has evolved into a weekly huddle using Zoom and now takes the place of departmental monthly meetings. This meeting continued even during the cyberattack in the fall of 2020 when group communications were challenged. Although Outlook calendars were not available to remind regular attendees of the meeting, there was full attendance using personal devices the morning after the network went down. No one in the division was in the dark about the handling of the pandemic response in the hospital, in Vermont, nationally or globally.

Desiree de Waal, M.S., R.D., C.D., FAND, renal dietician at UVM Medical Center, wrote an article for Renal Nutrition Forum titled "Re-evaluation of the In-Center Hemodialysis 'No Eating Policy' During the COVID-19 Pandemic."

Rachel Preston, M.S., R.D., C.D., is now a certified clinical transplant dietician through NATCO, the Organization for Donation and Transplant Professionals.

Elisa Vautier, N.P., joined the Division of Geriatric Medicine in September of 2020.

Debora Kamin Mukaz, M.S., Ph.D., postdoctoral associate in the Division of Hematology/Oncology, was featured in Forbes magazine for her work organizing #BlackInCardio, a virtual weeklong event focused on topics relevant to under-represented minorities in science and Black scientists. Who Knew?

Robert Lobel on the Ultimate Frisbee fieldRobert Lobel, M.D., assistant professor in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, has been chosen for the Ultimate Frisbee Hall of Fame. The Class of 2020 is the 17th class inducted into the Ultimate Hall of Fame, which was established in 2004 to honor exceptional ultimate players and contributors whose accomplishments are worthy of recognition and merit acknowledgement by their peers. Lobel and the seven other members of the Class of 2020 will be officially inducted into the Ultimate Hall of Fame during a ceremony at the 2023 National Championships.
