Research and Grants

Mary Cushman, M.D., M.Sc., professor in the Division of Hematology/Oncology, recently published research in Research and Practice in Thrombosis and Haemostasis that found biomarkers that identify women at increased risk of venous thrombosis with postmenopausal estrogen. Specifically, women in the top quarter of D-dimer level have an over six-fold increased risk from taking hormones. This suggests that this simple test could be useful for women about to begin hormones and who are concerned about their risk, and opens other avenues for research on the clinical utility of D-dimer testing in healthy people at risk of thrombosis in other situations.

Matthew Gilbert, D.O., M.P.H., associate professor in the Division of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism, is collaborating with Richard Pratley, M.D., and the inpatient diabetes management team at Florida Hospital in Orlando, Fla., on two retrospective reviews of the management of hyperglycemia in hospitalized patients with T2DM treated with enteral and parenteral nutrition. For a separate project, he is collaborating with the Community Health Centers of Burlington, Vt., on an E-consult system for thyroid nodules.
