Welcome to Larner Medicine | Message from Dean Page

Welcome to the debut of Larner Medicine, a bi-weekly celebration of the people and the programs at the University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine. In my first months as Dean, I have seen firsthand the deep commitment that our faculty and staff have to the education, research, clinical and service missions of our College.

I want to ensure that we take the opportunity to communicate and celebrate our success in a way that inspires pride, creates a culture of excellence, and builds on our strong reputation. In future editions of Larner Medicine, we’ll make sure to highlight our staff, educators, scientists and clinicians. So, I encourage you to share your ideas, highlights, and milestones as the year unfolds.

Thank you for all you do to educate the next generation of physicians and scientists, to create new knowledge about disease and wellness, to support and care for patients and their families, and to serve the communities where we live and work. And look out for the next edition of Larner Medicine! 

Triple Threat in Her Profession

A skilled researcher, clinician, and teacher, UVM Associate Professor of Medicine Renee Stapleton, M.D., Ph.D., is a "triple threat" and leader in the field of pulmonary and critical care medicine. Stapleton’s most recent RO1 application scored in the sixth percentile; she collaborates with not only colleagues locally, but researchers nationwide. She is principal or co-principal investigator on three multicenter randomized trials. As a clinician, she dedicates roughly 15-20 percent of her time to seeing patients in the pulmonary clinic and the medical intensive care unit. And she founded a popular research emphasis for doctor of medicine and doctor of nursing practice students. Read more

Partnership in Population Health

Adam Atherly, Ph.D., came to the University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine to head up the new Center for Health Services Research. The mission is clear: Foster cutting-edge research that improves the delivery of healthcare, leading to better population health in Vermont and across the country. The center promises to bring together regional institutions all focused on this same goal, amplifying their collective effect. “This is probably the best area of alignment of interest between the medical center, the health network, the Larner College of Medicine, and the University—bar none,” says Senior Associate Dean for Research Gordon Jensen, M.D., Ph.D.  Read more
