Course Description

The 2023 Primary Care Sports Medicine and Wilderness Medicine is designed to update knowledge and skills in the diagnosis and management of common sports medicine and wilderness medicine problems. Topics will include discussions of medical and orthopedic issues. There will be ample opportunity for participants to ask questions and interact with faculty, who hail from the University of Vermont Health Network and local community. The teaching program includes lectures and workshops.

Audience

The primary care team, including physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners and physician assistants, and other health professionals including physical therapists, athletic trainers, and emergency medical technicians with an interest in sports medicine and wilderness medicine are encouraged to attend.

Objectives

  1. Describe different treatments for sideline coverages: neck injury, fracture management
  2. Identify uses of alternative modalities to treat acute injuries with acupuncture 
  3. Better educate medical health care team on urgent versus emergent referrals
  4. Develop team-based approaches for wilderness survival skills

Accreditation

Refunds may be obtained, minus an administrative fee of $75, if notice of cancellation is received in writing to uvmcmie@med.uvm.edu by September 15, 2023. Substitutions can be arranged by calling 802-656-2292 but refunds are not possible after September 15, 2023.

*Medical Students and residents are invited to submit a case poster to the course director via email to kimberly.sikule@med.uvm.edu. If submitted by October 1, 2023 and approved by the course director, the registration fee will be reimbursed and attendance will be free of cost. You will need to present the poster at all breaks with vendors. Poster size should be less than 48 by 48.
