Overview

This event will discuss a variety of timely, practical issues that are encountered in the emergency department on a daily basis. Lectures will be engaging, sometimes controversial, and present the audience with examples of both successes and failures in emergency medicine. Changes don’t always equal advances and advancement doesn’t always mean change. At the end of this program, participants should be able to distinguish between advancement and change in the emergency department in a relaxed, family-oriented environment where learning does equal fun!

This program has been designed to include all emergency medicine professionals including physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, trauma nurses, residents, and emergency medicine technicians.

Objectives

Upon completion of this program, attendees should be able to:

  • Discuss the risk versus benefit of administering tPA to a patient with an acute CVA
  • Review diagnosis and management of cardiac emergencies in the ED
  • Be aware of the concepts and controversies of Pediatric Airway Management

Workshop Information - Echo Guided Life Support (EGLS) Workshop 

The EGLS Workshop will be held at the Robert Larner M.D. College of Medicine Sim Lab in Burlington, Vermont. The workshop takes place Sunday, January 22, 2017 at the Simulation Lab on the UVM Campus. It aims to introduce participants to the ultrasound approach of the hemodynamically unstable patient. This course is aimed at two audiences: physicians who are knowledgeable  about ultrasound and want to consolidate their knowledge, and novices who would like to be introduced to it.

 At the conclusion of EGLS training, participants will should have the skills to:

  • Categorize undifferentiated shock via an algorithmic approach
  • Identify pneumothorax and interstitial syndrome with lung ultrasound
  • Identify the signs of obstructive shock (tamponade, pulmonary embolism)
  • Qualitatively assess left ventricular function
  • Assess the inferior vena cava
  • Assess volemia and fluid responsiveness potential

Accreditation

The Robert Larner College of Medicine at The University of Vermont is accredited by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), to provide continuing medical education for the healthcare team. 

The University of Vermont designates this live activity for a maximum of 19.25 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. 

This program has been reviewed and is acceptable for up to 13.25 Nursing Contact Hours.

Application has been made to the American College of Emergency Physicians for ACEP Category I Credit.

Application for CME credit has been files with the American College of Family Physicians. Determination of credit is pending.

Please note: If you do not participate in the optional workshop, the conference is accredited for 13.25 credits.

Fees

Tuition: $575 Physicians; $325 Residents; $425 Nurses, Physician Assistants, and other Emergency Medicine professionals.

Fee includes electronic course materials, continental breakfast each morning, afternoon refreshments, and Monday evening reception.

Refunds: Refunds, minus an administrative fee of $75, will be made only if notice of cancellation is received, in writing, by January 10, 2017. No refunds are possible after that date.
